Right to Learn Afghanistan partnered with students in the Specialized High Skills Majors (SHSM) program at Glebe Collegiate yesterday afternoon for an event to raise funds that will help educate girls in Afghanistan. I was so impressed with these teenagers. They've chosen to focus on non-profits. They showcased Right to Learn Afghanistan as well as the local non-profits they're fundraising for. The three speakers were inspirational. All young Afghan women who related their personal histories in Afghanistan and spoke powerfully of how important education is to their lives and the lives of all the girls stuck in Afghanistan. Lauryn Oates, the director of Right to Learn Afghanistan, was patched in virtually and took part in the question and answer panel discussion. The present looks bleak but the future looks bright.

Please join Right to Learn Afghanistan -- Ottawa Chapter of Volunteers and University Women Helping Afghan Women, in collaboration with Carleton University Afghan Students’ Association, at Carleton University on January 24th to celebrate the International Day of Education.

11/25/2025

Today on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we honour Afghan women living under one of the world’s most systematic forms of gender-based violence: erasure from society.

Across Afghanistan, women and girls are being pushed out of public life, banned from schools, barred from work, restricted from public spaces and travel, and denied everyday freedoms.

Violence does not always appear as physical harm. It can look like a girl turned away from her classroom or a woman told she can no longer show up to work. It can be the slow disappearance of women from the spaces where they belong.

But knowledge is power that cannot be erased.

As the 16 Days of Activism begin, we invite you to stand with Afghan women and girls who bravely continue to learn, to lead, and to move forward despite the restrictions they face.

Book Launch for Catherine Lang's Embedded
Date: Tuesday, October 7, 2025
Time: 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM
Location: Perfect Books, 258A Elgin St., Ottawa
Join us in welcoming Catherine Lang to Perfect Books for the launch of her autobiography: Embedded: The Irreconcilable Nature of War, Loss, and Consequence

When Catherine Lang's niece and Calgary Herald reporter Michelle Lang was killed while embedded with Canadian troops near Kandahar City, Afghanistan, in 2009, her world shifted. In the aftermath, Lang and her family experienced the rigour of military ceremony. As she pieced together fragments from Michelle’s last days, Lang connected with the loved ones of soldiers who died alongside Michelle. She met with those injured by the roadside bomb, including the lone civilian woman speaking to Michelle at the time of the blast. In them, she discovered resilience, sacrifice, and the need to carry on.

Through this journey, Lang began to question previously held black-and-white views about military engagement, turning to writing as a way to process loss and ensure Michelle’s memory lived on.

We, the members of the Ottawa chapter of Right to Learn Afghanistan, offer our unwavering support to the Muslim community in Stittsville after this senseless and shocking act of vandalism. We stand firmly against this racism, hatred, and Islamophobia and we will continue to be an ally.
