Global Alliance for Tobacco Control

Global Alliance for Tobacco Control Half the people who smoke today will eventually be killed by to***co. In fact, to***co use is often described as the leading cause of death in the world.

GATC is an Alliance of NGOs and civil society organizations from countries around the world helping to develop and implement the world’s first global to***co treaty, the WHO’s Framework Convention on To***co Control (WHO FCTC). To help combat to***co’s insidious global grip, the Global Alliance for To***co Control (Formerly the Framework Convention Alliance) works to unite the global to***co contr

ol community and serve as the voice of civil society to accelerate progress on implementation of the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on To***co Control (FCTC). We also work to integrate to***co control in the global health and development agendas. The WHO FCTC requires countries (known as Parties) that endorse the treaty to adopt measures that reduce the devastating health, environmental, and economic impacts of to***co. These measures include:
• Strong legislation on to***co advertising, promotion, and sponsorship.
• Mandatory warning labels on cigarette packs.
• Smoke-free public places.
• Strict regulations on to***co product contents.
• Higher to***co taxes.
• Fighting to***co smuggling globally.
• Increasing and promoting to***co prevention, cessation, and research programs. GATC supports governments that sign the treaty, works to ensure the treaty’s measures are implemented by governments that become Parties, and advocates for including to***co control in global health and development agendas. Help spread the word about to***co’s devastating effects on people’s health, the environment, and the economy by adding this page to your favourites or sharing this page with friends and colleagues.

Mexico won the GATC Orchid Award today:

"For delivering one of the most powerful and uncompromising statements against the to***co industry at COP11 [on 17 November], a moment of particular significance for the region. Mexico made a clear and forceful call for global action, explicitly naming the industry as the biggest obstacle to progress. Their strong and passionate appeal sets the tone for COP11 and reinforces the urgency of holding the to***co industry accountable!”
