Protecting an exceptional natural landscape in Québec 🌿

Through the NHCP–LTCF program, Nature Cantons-de-l’Est acquired approximately 63 hectares of forested and wetland habitat along Lake Stoke. In partnership with the Corporation de développement socio-économique de Stoke and the Municipality of Stoke, nearly 75 hectares of ecologically important land are now protected.

This remarkable site includes mature forests, wetlands, and an important ecological corridor along the lake. The wetlands also play a key role in naturally filtering the main tributary feeding Lake Stoke, helping protect water quality and strengthen the resilience of local ecosystems.

A reminder to take a few minutes to get outside this week 🌿

Whether it’s a walk through the woods, time by the water, or just noticing the wildlife around you, spending time in nature helps build a stronger connection to the habitats we work to protect every day.

---------

Canadian Rivers Day 💧

Rivers connect habitats, support biodiversity, and provide essential resources for wildlife and communities across Canada.

Protecting healthy waterways helps protect the ecosystems that depend on them.

----------

Protecting important waterfowl habitat in Manitoba 🌿🦆

Through the NHCP–LTCF program, Manitoba Habitat Conservancy secured 83.93 hectares of habitat through a conservation easement within Manitoba’s Aspen Parkland Ecoregion.

Located in the Prairie Pothole Region, often referred to as North America’s “duck factory,” this landscape provides important breeding habitat for waterfowl and supports a wide range of biodiversity.

With much of this region converted to farmland, protecting the remaining natural habitat is critical for wildlife now and into the future.

June is here 🌿

Across Canada, habitats are in full swing, from wetlands and forests to grasslands, wildlife is active and raising the next generation.

A good reminder of how important it is to protect these spaces during the most active time of year.

Ruddy Duck
Oxyura jamaicensis

The North American Ruddy Duck breeds from British Columbia and the south-western MacKenzie District across the Canadian prairies to the Red River valley and south through the Great Plains with limited breeding in Mexico and the West indies. It winters on Atlantic and Pacific coasts from Delaware and British Columbia to Guatamala. Two isolated South American subspecies exist, the Columbian and Peruvian Ruddy ducks.

Ruddy ducks like freshwater marshes with enough open water for taking off and landing. These are frequently mud-bottomed, and there are ample bottom-feeding opportunities for larvae and vegetable foods. In winter they will eat small molluscs and crustaceans.

The female bends plants such as bulrushes to form a support for the next in which she lays about eight chalky-white eggs. They hatch in 23-26 days and the young are fledged at eight weeks.

Migration season is underway 🦆

Across Canada, birds are beginning to move north as conditions shift, with longer days, warming temperatures, and changing water levels all playing a role in timing.

Wetlands and stopover habitats are critical during this time, giving birds a place to rest and refuel along the way.

Connect. Protect. Together.

----------

Connecter. Protéger. Ensemble.

International Day for Biological Diversity 🌿

Biodiversity is more than the variety of plants and animals around us — it includes the ecosystems they live in and the connections between them.

It supports the foundations of everyday life, from the food we eat to the health of our communities. But as biodiversity declines, so do the systems we depend on.

This year’s theme, Harmony with nature and sustainable development, is a reminder that our future is closely tied to the health of the natural world.

-------
