Hnatyshyn Foundation - Fondation Hnatyshyn The Hnatyshyn Foundation funds and promotes Canadian artists working in all artistic disciplines.

The Hnatyshyn Foundation, a private charity established by the late Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn, Canada's twenty-fourth Governor General, began awarding grants in 2005. La Fondation Hnatyshyn, organisme de bienfaisance privé mis sur pied par le regretté et très honorable Ramon John Hnatyshyn, vingt-quatrième gouverneur général du Canada, a lancé le premier de ses programmes de bourses en 2005.

REMINDER: The Hnatyshyn Foundation is accepting nominations for the 2026 Joysanne Sidimus Ballet Grant! 🩰

One grant of $10,000 is awarded annually to an exceptional Canadian ballet dancer who is approaching the end of their training, and preparing to launch their professional career. Students and apprentices are eligible. Dancers must be nominated by a Canadian ballet company or professional ballet training institution.

The Hnatyshyn Foundation is accepting nominations for the 2026 William and Meredith Saunderson Prizes!

The Saunderson Prizes support Canadian emerging visual artists whose practices show potential and who are deemed to have the determination and talent to contribute to the legacy of art in Canada. Each year, three Saunderson Prizes of $10,000 each are awarded, as well as three finalists’ prizes of $4,000 each. 

Candidates must be nominated to be considered for a Saunderson Prize. Representatives of public and private galleries, fine arts training institutions and artist-run-centres are invited to submit a nomination.

Nomination deadline: March 18, 2026

With the recent passing of Bill Saunderson in mind, we are especially grateful to him and Meredith Saunderson and look forward to discovering the artists who will benefit from their support this year.

La Fondation Hnatyshyn accepte les nominations pour les Prix William et Meredith Saunderson! 

Les Prix Saunderson soutiennent des artistes visuel•les de la relève qui, dans l’estimation du jury, possèdent la détermination et le talent nécessaires pour contribuer au patrimoine artistique canadien. Tous les ans, six prix sont octroyés: trois Prix Saunderson (premiers prix) de 10 000 $, ainsi que trois Prix Saunderson (finalistes) de 4 000 $.

Date limite pour les nominations : 18 mars 2026

Les candidat•es doivent être nominé•es afin d’être considéré•es pour un Prix Saunderson. Nous invitons les représentant•es des galeries publiques et privées, des établissements de formation en beaux-arts, et des centres d’artistes autogérés à soumettre une nomination.

🔹🔸 About this image 🔹🔸 Pulled from the Foundation’s archives, this ad from 2004 promotes a fundraising concert at the National Arts Centre with The Oscar Peterson Quartet. The idea for the concert was Dr. Peterson’s, who, in 2003, told Mrs. Hnatyshyn he’d “like to do a benefit concert for the Foundation.” To this day, the Hnatyshyn Foundation is tremendously grateful for the late Dr. Peterson’s generosity. Our first Developing Artist Grants, including the Oscar Peterson Award for Jazz Performance, were awarded in 2005 and continue to be awarded annually.

We are deeply saddened to share news of the passing of Bill Saunderson, F.C.P.A., F.C.A. (1933-2026). Bill was a long-standing friend and supporter of the Hnatyshyn Foundation whose membership on our Board of Directors spanned over two decades.

Bill enjoyed a career as a politician, Chartered Professional Accountant, and investment advisor. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1995 to 1999, and served as a cabinet minister in the government of Mike Harris. The Hnatyshyn Foundation is fortunate to have benefitted from Bill’s financial expertise and wise counsel for over twenty years, since his appointment to the Board in 2003.
Among Bill’s numerous contributions to the arts in Canada and to the Foundation’s mission, his and his wife Meredith’s support of the Saunderson Prizes for Emerging Visual Artists, to which they have been the benefactors since 2015, has been particularly impactful. Through this generous support, the Saunderson Prizes have championed the practices of 33 Canadian artists since 2015.

Bill will be dearly missed. We at the Foundation send our deepest condolences to his wife Meredith, his children and grandchildren, and his friends.

L’idée du concert est venue du Dr Peterson qui, en 2003, a proposé à Mme Hnatyshyn d’organiser un concert-bénéfice pour la Fondation. À ce jour, la Fondation Hnatyshyn est extrêmement reconnaissante envers le regretté Dr Peterson pour sa générosité. Nos premières Bourses d’études, dont la Bourse Oscar Peterson d’interprétation jazz, ont été décernées en 2005 et continuent d’être attribuées tous les ans.

The Hnatyshyn Foundation is accepting nominations for the 2026 Gerda Hnatyshyn Launch Grants!

The Launch Grants provide project support to Canadian performing artists who recently completed studies in their discipline (at any postsecondary level) or have equivalent experience. One grant of $10,000 is awarded annually in each of the following disciplines:

Classical Music • Contemporary Music • English Theatre • French Theatre • Contemporary Dance

The Launch Grants are intended to support an original creative project, for which candidates must submit a proposal.

The Hnatyshyn Foundation is accepting nominations for the 2026 Developing Artist Grants!

The Developing Artist Grants support Canadian performing artists enrolled in a post-secondary program. Two grants are awarded annually in each of the following disciplines (Developing Artist Grant of $12,500 and Finalist’s Grant of $4,000):

In 2025, the Hnatyshyn Foundation…

✨Supported 34 Canadian artists and curators through grants, awards and residencies totalling over $330,000

✨Launched a new program to support performing artists in early career (The Gerda Hnatyshyn Launch Grants) 

✨Increased funding to emerging visual artists by implementing awards for the finalists of the Saunderson Prizes

✨Worked with over 50 arts professionals as part of our jury process

This would not have been possible without the counsel of our Board of Directors, the expertise of our jurors, and the support we receive from donors. We look forward to supporting many more exceptional Canadian artists in 2026 and beyond!

The Hnatyshyn Foundation is now accepting nominations for the 2026 William and Meredith Saunderson Prizes for Emerging Visual Artists!

Deadline to nominate: March 18, 2026

We are proud to announce that in addition to the top three prizes of $10,000, each of the top three finalists will receive a prize of $4,000.

Please be advised that the guidelines for this program have been updated. Please read the revised guidelines on our website prior to submitting a nomination.
