🌟 Get to know Crystal Mowry, laureate of the 2026 Mid-Career Award for Curatorial Excellence 🌟

Crystal Mowry is the Director of Programs at the MacKenzie Art Gallery, a position she has held since 2021. She previously served as Senior Curator at the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery. Her work often explores the tension between perceived authenticity and troubled forms of representation. As a curator operating primarily within a public art museum, she treats her role as equal parts co-conspirator and translator, drawing on roots in studio practice to support artists in the development and subsequent touring of new projects.

The selection committee noted Mowry’s care, generosity, wisdom, and professionalism, and was unanimous in the view that this award was a timely recognition of her work.

🌟 Découvrez Crystal Mowry, lauréate du Prix de mi-carrière pour le commissariat d’art contemporain de 2026 🌟

Crystal Mowry est Directrice des programmes à la MacKenzie Art Gallery, poste qu’elle occupe depuis 2021. Auparavant, elle a occupé le poste de commissaire d’expositions en chef à la Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery. Son travail explore souvent la tension entre l’authenticité perçue et les formes de représentation problématiques. En tant que commissaire exerçant principalement au sein d’un musée d’art public, elle considère son rôle comme celui, à parts égales, d’une complice et d’une traductrice, s’appuyant sur son expérience de la pratique en atelier pour accompagner les artistes dans le développement et la diffusion de nouveaux projets.

Les membres du comité de sélection ont souligné la bienveillance, la générosité, la sagesse et le professionnalisme de Mowry, et ont été unanimes à considérer qu’il était grand temps de reconnaître son travail par le biais de ce prix.

🌟Get to know Howie Tsui, laureate of the 2026 Mid-Career Award for Excellence in Visual Arts 🌟

Howie Tsui (徐浩恩, b. Hong Kong) is an interdisciplinary artist based on unceded Coast Salish territories. His practice spans ink brush painting, interactive sound sculpture, lenticular light box and installation. Tsui constructs tense, fictive environments that gleefully deflate revered art forms and narrative genres, often stemming from the Chinese literati tradition. He employs a stylized form of derisive and exaggerated imagery as a way to satirize and disarm the homogenizing agendas of broadening regimes. He synthesizes diverging socio-cultural anxieties around superstition, surveillance and the “abject other” through a wry outsider sensibility - casting light onto the contradictions of diasporic life.

The award’s selection committee applauded Tsui’s multi-media practice that merges historical references with contemporary technology in expansive, imposing pieces coloured by a witty sense of humour.

We are excited to celebrate these candidates who have generated new ways of making and thinking about art in Canada, and in doing so, strengthened the Canadian arts landscape.

From a longlist of 28 total candidates, these ten nominees were identified by the selection committees as being particularly deserving of recognition at this point in their careers. Please join us in congratulating them! 🎉

We are excited to announce the curator who will participate in the 2026 Fogo Island Arts Young Curator Residency: Laura Hodgins!

This fall, will spend six weeks in residence on Fogo Island, NL. During her residency, she plans on researching and developing a framework for a future Northern art event to help shape identity, attract visitors, and generate cultural momentum north of the 60th parallel.

Laura is a white-settler arts administrator and curator from Sǫ̀mbak’è on Chief Drygeese Territory (Yellowknife, Northwest Territories). She is the President and primary curator of the Yellowknife Artist Run Community Centre and holds an MA and BFA in Art History.

Laura’s curatorial philosophy is grounded in a commitment to the arts of the Northwest Territories, where she was born, raised, and continues to live.

Nous avons le grand plaisir d’annoncer la commissaire qui participera à la Résidence Fogo Island Arts pour jeune commissaire de 2026 : Laura Hodgins!

Cet automne, passera six semaines en résidence sur l’île de Fogo, à Terre-Neuve. Lors de sa résidence, elle compte mener des recherches qui contribueront à élaborer un cadre pour un futur événement artistique dans le Nord, visant à façonner l’identité locale, à attirer des visiteurs et à générer un élan culturel au nord du 60e parallèle

Laura est une administratrice artistique et commissaire blanche d’ascendance coloniale originaire de Sǫ̀mbak’è sur le territoire du chef Drygeese (Yellowknife, Territoires du Nord-Ouest). Elle est présidente et commissaire principale du Yellowknife Artist Run Community Centre et est titulaire d’une maîtrise et d’un baccalauréat en histoire de l’art.

La philosophie de Laura en matière de commissariat d’expositions repose sur son engagement envers les arts des Territoires du Nord-Ouest, où elle est née, a grandi et continue de vivre.

REMINDER: The Hnatyshyn Foundation is accepting nominations for the 2026 Joysanne Sidimus Ballet Grant! 🩰

One grant of $10,000 is awarded annually to an exceptional Canadian ballet dancer who is approaching the end of their training, and preparing to launch their professional career. Students and apprentices are eligible. Dancers must be nominated by a Canadian ballet company or professional ballet training institution.

The Hnatyshyn Foundation is accepting nominations for the 2026 William and Meredith Saunderson Prizes!

The Saunderson Prizes support Canadian emerging visual artists whose practices show potential and who are deemed to have the determination and talent to contribute to the legacy of art in Canada. Each year, three Saunderson Prizes of $10,000 each are awarded, as well as three finalists’ prizes of $4,000 each. 

Candidates must be nominated to be considered for a Saunderson Prize. Representatives of public and private galleries, fine arts training institutions and artist-run-centres are invited to submit a nomination.

Nomination deadline: March 18, 2026

With the recent passing of Bill Saunderson in mind, we are especially grateful to him and Meredith Saunderson and look forward to discovering the artists who will benefit from their support this year.
