We are saddened to share the news of the passing of Robert Irvine on June 9th, 2026. Many knew him as “Mr. Guns” as his dedication to the care and maintenance of the ships’ cannons was well known among the crew. He took great pride in teaching others the proper techniques for firing them, and his patience and enthusiasm left a lasting impression on all of us at Bytown Brigantine who worked along side him. He will be greatly missed. As Mr. Guns often said, “Any day you can fire a cannon is a good day.”

Bytown Brigantine Inc. Tall Ships Adventure is providing a fun and engaging opportunity for Alumni to further develop skills learned during the summer sailing season. From logbook lessons to hands-on experience, there is something new for everyone to learn! 
The program begins September 26th, 2026. Two Saturdays a month until December 19, 2026.

This past Saturday, April 25, we gathered at Britannia Yacht Club in Ottawa for our annual Spring Work Party aboard Black Jack – and what a day it was!

With an incredible turnout of 18 dedicated crew members, volunteers, Winter Program students and family members, we made tremendous progress bringing Black Jack out of winter lay-up and beginning the important maintenance work for the year ahead.

Together, we got a huge amount done, including removing covers, downrigging the frame, sanding and painting the hull and rub rail, and tidying up below deck.

It was a full, productive day, and a great reminder of what can be accomplished when our community comes together with a shared purpose.

⚓ BBI at the Ottawa Outdoor & Adventure Travel Show ⚓

This past weekend (April 25–26), Bytown Brigantine made a big splash at the Ottawa Outdoor & Adventure Travel Show. We turned our booth into a full-on tall ship experience – with rigging, sails, shrouds, barrels and cannons!

Over 5,000 people passed by our stand throughout the weekend, with hundreds of flyers handed out and plenty of great conversations with curious visitors, families, alumni and future trainees.

It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with the community, share what we do, and spark interest in our Tall Ships Adventures.

A big thank you to everyone who helped set up, staff the booth, and spent the weekend representing BBI – your energy and enthusiasm made all the difference!

Our Adventure Sailing Camps offer youth ages 12–14 a unique blend of sailing, outdoor exploration, teamwork, and leadership. No prior sailing experience is needed — just curiosity and a sense of adventure. Campers spend 5 days on the water aboard a 27-foot sailboat, learning the basics of sailing, building confidence, making new friends, and exploring Ottawa’s beautiful riverfront. The fourth day of camp will transition into 1 overnight camping experience where campers take part in evening activities, dinner, and a supervised overnight stay.
