Black communities across Canada are calling for the proposed United Nations Declaration on the Human Rights of People of African Descent to move beyond symbolic recognition and establish enforceable rights, reparatory justice, and durable accountability mechanisms.

Listening sessions in Toronto, Ottawa and N.S. lead to calls for a Black Equity Commissioner and human rights-based regulations for AI.

Amnesty International Canada and the Black Canadian Civil Society Coalition held a news conference on Parliament Hill today to release a report based on consultations with black communities in Canada concerning the proposed United Nations Declaration on the Human Rights of People of African Descent (UNPFPAD).

The consultations brought together Black communities and civil society organizations across Canada to share their experiences, priorities and recommendations.

Freedom of expression and peaceful assembly are fundamental Charter-protected rights. They do not belong only to Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Migrants must be able to speak out, organize and protest without those activities becoming a pathway to immigration enforcement.

A dozen people who took part in a weeks-long international student protest in northeast Calgary have been flagged as "being possibly inadmissible" and, according to an immigration lawyer, could be forced to leave Canada.

Today, Amnesty International Canada and the Black Canadian Civil Society Coalition released the report from the February 2026 consultation with the UN Permanent Forum of People of African Descent (UNPFPAD).
