NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION: PROTECT THE RIGHT TO STRIKE!✊

The right to strike is a fundamental workers’ right, and we must stand together to defend it!

On Thursday, October 15th, join the Ottawa & District Labour Council (ODLC), Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), and Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) as we call on Prime Minister Mark Carney to remove Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code and protect workers’ fundamental right to strike and bargain collectively.

Section 107 gives the federal government sweeping powers to intervene in labour disputes, undermining workers’ collective bargaining power and their ability to fight for fair wages, safe workplaces, and better working conditions.

The right to strike is fundamental to workers’ bargaining power. Bill C-39 could expand the federal government’s ability to end legal strikes and impose binding arbitration.

Tomorrow, September 30, marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

This day is an opportunity to recognize and reflect on the lasting and intergenerational harms caused by the residential school system, honour Survivors and intergenerational Survivors, and remember the children who never made it home.

Orange Shirt Day was inspired by the experience of Phyllis Webstad, a member of the Stswecem’c Xget’tem First Nation and residential school Survivor, and continues to remind us that Every Child Matters.

Here in Ottawa, a commemorative gathering will take place on Parliament Hill on September 30 at 12:00p.m. Those who cannot attend in person can also watch the event on APTN.

We encourage everyone to take time to listen, learn, reflect, and engage with the ongoing legacy of residential schools and the work of truth and reconciliation.
