Canada and Ecuador are about to sign a Free Trade Agreement that protects corporations over people.

Ecuadorians say they were not consulted on the deal that will exacerbate an already dire human rights crisis. Indigenous leaders warn the agreement will expand Canadian-backed resource extraction, while communities already living with the impacts of mining face militarization, criminalization, and escalating threats.

We reject trade deals that sacrifice human rights, democracy, and the environment for investor profits.

Trade should put people first. It should uphold Indigenous rights, protect land and water, defend human rights, and drive a just energy transition that leaves no one behind.

People over profits! That's the trade we want. That’s the trade we need.

Today, one year later, we say clearly: we have kept our commitment.
📢 We have kept our commitment because Kimsakocha has ceased to be a sectoral cause and has become the great social pact of Cuenca and Azuay.

While the people demand life, those in power respond with extractivism. But the Fifth River continues to grow—in those who protect the headwaters, in those who resist, and in those who refuse to allow the will of the people to be treated as a mere suggestion.
