Today, on International Youth Day, we're proud to share a powerful new op-ed from Youth Apprenticeship Council member Isabelle Ouellette.

As an Auto Body and Collision Technician apprentice, Isabelle knows firsthand that attracting more young people to the skilled trades is only part of the solution. If we want to build a strong, resilient workforce, we also need to ensure apprentices have the support they need to succeed and build lasting careers.

From financial pressures and access to training to workplace culture and mentorship, Isabelle explores the barriers too many apprentices continue to face and the opportunities to strengthen Canada's apprenticeship system.

🌟Meet the Youth Apprenticeship Council

This month we are introducing Matthew Rupert, an Electrical Apprentice from British Columbia and member of the inaugural Youth Apprenticeship Council.

“There is still a stigma around the trades. I want to show students there’s another path, and it’s not what people think it is.”

Based in Port Coquitlam, Matthew is an electrical apprentice with Modern Niagara, where he is gaining hands-on experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting electrical systems while working alongside journeypersons in the field.

Matthew brings an important perspective shaped by his own journey into the trades. Like many young people, he was encouraged toward university, with limited exposure to skilled trades as a viable and rewarding career path.

Through the Youth Apprenticeship Council, he is focused on raising awareness, breaking down stigma, and helping more young people see the trades as a strong first-choice career option.
