Can I get real for a sec?
I just saw The Pixies in Toronto and as amazing as it is to see one of my favourite bands on my bucket list, a show at a huge venue like that just doesn’t compare to the energy and enthusiasm experienced from taking part in a little, local, diy gig.
The lack of community was palpable. Where was the feeling of shared experience? People could have cared less about talking to me or not. Everyone was in their own worlds. The unity felt broken.
My heart lies in the underground. Some of my favourite memories were from seeing bands in sweaty basements, crowded houses and packed alleyways. Getting up close and personal with true passion is an unforgettable and impactful experience. Sharing memories with others is what builds community and unity. I’m so thankful for all the shows I’ve attended in Ottawa over the years, and for being able to contribute that back into the scene.
That being said, I’m not sure the future of The Womb…
this may or may not be the last year I’m here. There’s many unknowns. But what I do know is that there’s a few more shows in the books for 2024, so come out and support a show while you can. Support the independent artists.
✨We all started somewhere, even if that’s just from the basement of an unknown address you found by asking a punk✨
