Founded in 2022, the Upper Hammonds Plains Community Land Trust (UHPCLT) was created to provide non-market housing and preserve African Nova Scotian culture and heritage through collective land stewardship. In 2024, UHPCLT incorporated the Upper Hammonds Plains Housing Co-operative, the largest investment in Black co-operative housing the Government of Canada has ever made. This project is a shining example of what's possible when experience, investment, and collaboration come together.

✅ Advocacy win!

After months of action by co-op members across Canada, the federal government has committed to extending the Federal Community Housing Initiative for five years beyond 2028.

This announcement brings greater certainty to thousands of households that rely on rental assistance to remain in their housing co-operatives and helps co-ops continue providing stable, affordable homes in mixed-income communities.

We are especially grateful to the many co-op members who participated in CHF Canada's You Hold the Key campaign by writing letters, contacting elected officials, shared their stories, and championing the need for long-term support. Together, we demonstrated the power of collective advocacy.

As budget consultations are underway, CHF Canada is calling on the federal government to take four practical actions:

✅ Renew rental assistance for co-op and non-profit housing for at least 10 years
✅ Invest in urban, rural, and northern Indigenous housing through a For-Indigenous, By-Indigenous approach
✅ Prioritize co-op and non-profit housing through Build Canada Homes
✅ Enable the repair and renewal of existing co-op and non-profit housing

These actions will improve affordability and support economic resilience.

Stable housing changes lives.

For many co-op residents rental assistance is what makes affordable housing possible. Without it, many could be forced to leave their homes and communities.

The current program works. It's cost-effective, keeps people housed, and helps prevent larger social challenges down the road.

Watch the full video to hear why continuity matters and why the solution is already in place.

This week, CHF Canada’s Prairie Region Manager, Maria Vaiaso, spoke to the City of Regina’s Executive Committee in support of the proposed Housing Strategy.

Our message was clear: Creating more co-op and non-profit housing in Regina starts with empowering emerging community-led organizations to play a meaningful role in housing development. Clearer pathways and partnerships can help build the capacity needed to deliver affordable housing for generations to come.

Thank you to the Mayor and Council members for the opportunity to share our perspectives; we look forward to working together to expand affordable housing options in Saskatchewan.
