After drought and conflict forced Fatuma and her family to leave their home in Somalia, they arrived in Baidoa with few options for earning an income. Some days, the family survived on just one meal.

Then Fatuma discovered a new opportunity: hydroponic farming.

Through a project supported by SOS Children’s Villages and The Peter Gilgan Foundation, Fatuma joined a cooperative of women learning to grow fresh vegetables using hydroponics, a climate-resilient approach that uses up to 90% less water than traditional agriculture.

Today, she is turning those new skills into income and helping ensure her six children can go to school.

“I use part of the money to make sure my children can go to school. Education is important for their future.”

The project is supporting 200 female-headed households in Baidoa, helping women build sustainable livelihoods while adapting to the realities of drought and climate change.

Climate-smart solutions are helping families build more resilient futures in Somalia.

Growing up in a one-room home on the outskirts of Da Nang, Vietnam, Thủy dreamed of going to school.

Her father died when she was three, leaving her mother to raise three children alone. “Our family was very poor,” recalls Thủy, now 29. “My mother could not afford to send all of us to school.”

With support from SOS Children’s Villages Vietnam’s Family Strengthening Program, Thủy and her siblings stayed in school and built successful careers.

Through YouthRISE at SOS Children's Villages Mexico, a robotics 🤖 workshop using LEGO helped children and young people develop skills that matter for their future, from teamwork and communication to patience and problem-solving.

For one participant, the experience sparked a dream:
“I would like to study robotics engineering and build more robots in the future.”

When children and young people have opportunities to learn, explore, and collaborate, they strengthen the skills and confidence they need to shape their own paths.

What do you do when your home is extensively damaged, and life changes in a matter of minutes?

On August 10, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia, causing widespread damage. SOS Children’s Villages Colombia is assessing the impact on children, families and communities in affected areas and determining where support is needed most urgently.

The earthquake came at a time when millions of people in Colombia were already facing humanitarian challenges.

YouthRISE is a partnership between Scotiabank and SOS Children’s Villages Canada, Aldeas Infantiles SOS México and SOS Children's Villages -Jamaica.

30,000+ young people. 48 countries. One shared goal: helping young people succeed in the world of work.

In 2025, YouthCan! connected more than 30,000 young people with mentoring, skills training and first work experiences, supported by 1,590 volunteers and 374 partners, most of them local.

One example is YouthRISE, a partnership between SOS Children's Villages Canada, Scotiabank, Aldeas Infantiles SOS México and SOS Children's Villages -Jamaica. Through virtual mentoring, Scotiabank volunteers helped young people build skills and confidence, reaching participants across borders and in remote communities.

Together, we're creating more opportunities for young people to build brighter futures.

Following the massive overnight attack on Kyiv on July 2, SOS Children's Villages Ukraine staff, and the children and families they support, are safe.

The attack damaged the Family Strengthening Centre and Youth Centre, and two families participating in the Family Strengthening Program lost their homes.

While some staff began cleaning up the damaged offices so programs could resume as quickly as possible, others immediately focused on supporting affected children and families.

Every young person's path is different. So is the support they need to succeed. 💙
This International Youth Skills Day, we're celebrating young people who are building their futures in inspiring ways.

From caregiving, leadership, and independent living to sustainable businesses and technical innovation, young people are showing that empowerment takes many forms.

At SOS Children's Villages, we know that skills are only part of the journey. Young people also need trusted relationships, encouragement and opportunities to turn their ambitions into reality.

Through initiatives like Green Growth, YouthCan! and YouthRISE, alongside our broader support for children and young people without parental care or at risk of losing it, we're helping young people build the confidence, skills and connections they need to become their strongest selves.

Explore inspiring stories from Brazil, Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Jamaica, Mexico, Nepal, Rwanda, Somaliland, and Vietnam, and see how young people are creating opportunities for themselves, their families and their communities.
