Минулого тижня ми закликали українську громаду Оттави долучитися до міжнародної кампанії . У п’ятницю учасники акції зібралися біля Посольства росії в Канаді, щоб привернути увагу до катастрофічної гуманітарної ситуації в окупованих Олешках на Херсонщині.

До акції долучилися президентка Конґресу Українців Канади — Відділ Оттава Zubriy Ksenia та CEO Конґресу Українців Канади Danylo Korbabicz, разом із представниками української громади та небайдужими мешканцями Оттави.

Олешки залишаються під російською окупацією в умовах надзвичайно тяжкої гуманітарної кризи. Мешканці стикаються з нестачею їжі, води, медикаментів та інших базових потреб, а можливості безпечно залишити небезпечну територію вкрай обмежені. ООН повідомляє про критичну ситуацію для цивільних у прифронтових та окупованих районах, зокрема проблеми з безпечною евакуацією та доступом гуманітарної допомоги.

Акція в Оттаві стала частиною ширшої міжнародної солідарності з Олешками — із закликом не дозволити людям, які перебувають під окупацією, залишитися невидимими для світу.

Їжа, вода, ліки та безпечний шлях для цивільних — це не привілей. Це базові права людини.

Ми закликаємо Канаду та міжнародну спільноту продовжувати вимагати безперешкодного гуманітарного доступу, захисту цивільного населення та безпечної евакуації тих, хто прагне виїхати.

Дякуємо всім, хто прийшов, приніс українські прапори й плакати та додав свій голос до міжнародного заклику:

| Ottawa joins the global call to stand with Oleshky

Last week, we called on Ottawa’s Ukrainian community to join the international campaign. On Friday, demonstrators gathered outside the Russian Embassy in Canada to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Russian-occupied Oleshky, Kherson region.

Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Ottawa Branch President Zubriy Ksenia and Ukrainian Canadian Congress CEO Danylo Korbabicz joined members of the Ukrainian community and supporters in standing in solidarity with the civilians trapped under Russian occupation.

Oleshky remains under Russian occupation amid an extremely serious humanitarian crisis. Residents face shortages of food, water, medicine and other basic necessities, while opportunities to leave the dangerous area safely are severely limited. The UN has reported critical conditions facing civilians in frontline and occupied areas, including barriers to safe evacuation and humanitarian access.
The Ottawa demonstration was part of a broader international show of solidarity with Oleshky — and a call to ensure that people living under occupation are not allowed to become invisible to the world.

Food, water, medicine and a safe passage for civilians are not privileges. They are fundamental human rights.

We call on Canada and the international community to continue demanding unimpeded humanitarian access, protection of civilians, and safe evacuation for those seeking to leave.

💙💛 Every Ukrainian child abducted by the russian federation must return home.

Representatives of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Ottawa Branch, were honoured to welcome the Save Ukraine team, led by its founder Mykola Kuleba, to Canada’s capital, alongside with young people who had been brought back from the occupation.

The delegation travelled to Canada to participate in “Pathways to Peace,” an international conference dedicated to the return of Ukrainian children, detained civilians and prisoners of war.

Save Ukraine carries out extraordinary, life-changing work. According to the organization, its team has already rescued 1,763 children from russia and Ukraine’s temporarily occupied territories. Behind every number is a child’s life, a difficult journey to freedom and a chance for a safer future. Their support continues beyond rescue, helping children and families reunite, heal and rebuild their lives through rehabilitation and reintegration.

UCC Ottawa remains committed to supporting Save Ukraine’s efforts to bring Ukrainian children home and help them recover. We sincerely thank the team for their courage, dedication and tireless work.

The residents are without electricity, water, food, and medicine. They are being used as human shields by the russians who deny humanitarian aid by the international community and a safe passage out of the danger zone.

Культура — це не лише те, що ми успадкували. Це те, що ми зберігаємо, передаємо далі й відкриваємо світові.

Упродовж вересня Онтаріо відзначає Ukrainian Heritage Month — Місяць української спадщини, офіційно встановлений провінційним законодавством у 2024 році. Законопроєкт Bill 215 був внесений до Законодавчих зборів Онтаріо MPP Sheref Sabawy та отримав королівську санкцію 19 грудня 2024 року.

Дата і місяць мають особливе символічне значення. Саме 7 вересня 1891 року задокументовано прибуття до Канади перших українських іммігрантів — Василя Єлиняка та Івана Пилипіва. Сьогодні понад 340 000 жителів Онтаріо мають українське походження, а внесок українців є важливою частиною культурного, економічного, суспільного й політичного життя провінції.

Але Ukrainian Heritage Month — це не лише про минуле. Це про культурну дипломатію сьогодні.

Кожен український концерт, фестиваль, виставка, книжка, майстер-клас, традиційна страва, вишиванка чи українська пісня — це можливість розповісти Канаді, хто ми є. Особливо зараз, коли Росія намагається знищувати не лише українські міста, а й українську культурну спадщину та ідентичність, збереження і популяризація нашої культури набувають ще глибшого значення.

Саме тому КУК Оттава закликає українські організації, громади, митців, освітян, бізнеси та родини використовувати цей місяць, щоб відкривати Україну канадському суспільству — через нашу історію, культуру, традиції, кухню, мистецтво та сучасну Україну.

Ми також вітаємо подальший рух цієї ідеї на загальноканадський рівень. Федеральний Bill S-210, ініційований Senator Stan Kutcher та спонсорований у Палаті громад MP Yvan Baker, має на меті офіційно визначити вересень Ukrainian Heritage Month по всій Канаді.

Культурна дипломатія починається не лише в посольствах. Вона починається в наших громадах — коли ми ділимося Україною з нашими сусідами, друзями та наступними поколіннями канадців.

🇨🇦 September is Ukrainian Heritage Month in Ontario

Culture is not only what we inherit. It is what we preserve, pass on, and share with the world.

Throughout September, Ontario celebrates Ukrainian Heritage Month, officially established through provincial legislation in 2024. Bill 215, introduced in the Ontario Legislature by MPP Sheref Sabawy, received Royal Assent on December 19, 2024.

September carries special historical significance. On September 7, 1891, the first documented Ukrainian immigrants to Canada, Vasyl Eleniak and Ivan Pylypiw, arrived in this country. Today, more than 340,000 Ontarians are of Ukrainian heritage, and generations of Ukrainian Canadians have contributed enormously to the cultural, economic, social and political fabric of our province.

But Ukrainian Heritage Month is not only about looking back. It is also about cultural diplomacy today.

Every Ukrainian concert, festival, exhibition, book, workshop, traditional dish, embroidered shirt and Ukrainian song is an opportunity to help Canadians understand who we are. At a time when Russia seeks to destroy not only Ukrainian cities but also Ukraine's cultural heritage and identity, preserving and sharing Ukrainian culture carries even greater significance.

UCC Ottawa encourages Ukrainian organizations, community groups, artists, educators, businesses and families to use this month to bring Ukraine closer to Canadian society — through our history, traditions, cuisine, arts, culture and the story of modern Ukraine.

We also welcome the effort to bring this recognition to the national level. Federal Bill S-210, introduced by Senator Stan Kutcher and sponsored in the House of Commons by MP Yvan Baker, seeks to designate September as Ukrainian Heritage Month throughout Canada.

Cultural diplomacy does not begin only in embassies. It begins in our communities — every time we share Ukraine with our neighbours, our friends and the next generation of Canadians.

🇺🇦 Від Оттави до загальноканадського діалогу: КУК Оттава на зустрічах із Президентом України та Першою Леді

Сильна адвокація починається з присутності там, де відбуваються важливі розмови.

Президент КУК Оттава Ксенія Зубрій взяла участь у зустрічах із Президентом України Володимиром Зеленським та Першою Леді України Оленою Зеленською під час їхнього візиту до Канади.

Разом із представниками української громади з Оттави, Торонто та інших міст Канади Ксенія Зубрій долучилася до важливого діалогу про те, що сьогодні потребує нашої особливої уваги: подальшу підтримку України, посилення української адвокації в Канаді, гуманітарні ініціативи, відбудову, допомогу українським дітям і родинам та майбутнє стратегічного партнерства між Україною і Канадою.

Для КУК Оттава участь у таких зустрічах — це значно більше, ніж представництво нашої громади. Це можливість бути частиною спільної роботи, яка об’єднує українців від місцевого до національного рівня навколо головної мети: зберігати Україну серед ключових пріоритетів Канади та перетворювати суспільну підтримку на конкретні рішення і дії.

Сьогодні особливо важливо працювати злагоджено. Громадські організації, волонтери, благодійні фонди, меценати, бізнес, дипломати, політичні лідери та друзі України можуть представляти різні середовища — але коли йдеться про майбутнє України, наш голос має звучати разом.

І ця сила єдності не виникла сьогодні.

Цього року ми відзначаємо 135 років українців у Канаді — 135 років неймовірної історії громади, яка приїжджала сюди різними хвилями, будувала церкви, школи, організації та бізнеси, розвивала канадські міста й громади, зберігала українську мову, культуру та ідентичність — і водночас ніколи не переставала говорити про Україну.

За ці десятиліття українці стали невід’ємною частиною Канади, а українсько-канадська громада — однією з найорганізованіших і найвпливовіших українських діаспор у світі.

Сьогодні нове покоління продовжує цю роботу.

В умовах російської війни проти України наше завдання — не лише допомагати долати наслідки війни. Наше завдання — думати стратегічно: про безпеку України, її відбудову, дітей і родини, міжнародні партнерства та про те, якою буде підтримка України через роки.

КУК Оттава щиро дякує Президенту України Володимиру Зеленському та Першій Леді Олені Зеленській за зустрічі та відкритий діалог з українською громадою Канади.

Дякуємо також усім представникам українських громад, організаціям, волонтерам, благодійникам, меценатам і партнерам, які щодня доводять: сила діаспори вимірюється не лише її чисельністю, а її здатністю об’єднуватися, діяти та впливати.

🇨🇦 From Ottawa to the National Conversation: UCC Ottawa at Meetings with Ukraine’s President and First Lady

Strong advocacy begins with being present where important conversations take place.

UCC Ottawa President Kseniia Zubrii participated in meetings with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska during their visit to Canada.

Together with representatives of Ukrainian communities from Ottawa, Toronto, and other cities across Canada, Kseniia Zubrii joined an important dialogue about the issues demanding our attention today: continued support for Ukraine, stronger Ukrainian advocacy in Canada, humanitarian initiatives, reconstruction, assistance for Ukrainian children and families, and the future of the strategic partnership between Canada and Ukraine.

For UCC Ottawa, participating in conversations like these is about much more than representation. It means contributing to a collective effort that connects Ukrainian communities from the local to the national level around one essential objective: keeping Ukraine among Canada’s priorities and transforming public solidarity into meaningful decisions and action.

At this moment, coordinated work matters enormously. Community organizations, volunteers, charities, philanthropists, businesses, diplomats, political leaders, and friends of Ukraine may represent different sectors — but when Ukraine’s future is at stake, our voices must come together.

And the strength behind that unity did not emerge overnight.

This year marks 135 years of Ukrainians in Canada — 135 years of an extraordinary community story. Generations of Ukrainians arrived in different waves, built churches, schools, organizations and businesses, contributed to Canadian cities and communities, preserved their language, culture and identity — and never stopped speaking for Ukraine.

Over those decades, Ukrainians became an integral part of Canada, while the Ukrainian Canadian community grew into one of the most organized and influential Ukrainian diasporas in the world.

Today, a new generation continues that work.

As Ukraine confronts Russia’s war, our responsibility is not only to address the consequences of war. We must think strategically — about Ukraine’s security, reconstruction, children and families, international partnerships, and what sustained support for Ukraine will look like years from now.

UCC Ottawa sincerely thanks President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and First Lady Olena Zelenska for meeting with the Ukrainian Canadian community and for the open and meaningful dialogue.

We also thank community representatives, organizations, volunteers, charities, philanthropists, and partners across Canada whose daily work demonstrates an important truth: the strength of a diaspora is measured not only by its numbers, but by its ability to unite, act, and make an impact.

For 135 years, Ukrainians have helped build Canada — and for 135 years, Canada has heard the Ukrainian voice.

Today, Ukraine needs that voice more than ever.
