🤩 Amazing turnout at our first ever in-person Annual General Meeting yesterday with close to 100 people in attendance where we voted on important motions for our members, heard from candidates for our Board of Directors election and discussed what we are going to do to push for more progressives to be elected to city council this Fall.

Thanks to all who came out to make this our best AGM yet!

Let's get it done đź’Ş

Kareem is with DSA New York City, and worked on both Zohran Mamdani's and Bernie Sanders' campaigns. He also worked as a negotiator and rep for IFPTE Local 70. We're super excited to learn from Kareem's experience and get some expert advice for our election campaign this fall!

We're very disappointed in the City's decision to hire disgraced former TTC CEO Rick Leary to head OC Transpo.

In Toronto, Leary consistently avoided accountability for his failures, and was accused of abusive and corrupt behaviour. We're concerned that these patterns will continue at a time when transit riders are already at their breaking point.

You can read our full statement below:

OTTAWA – Horizon Ottawa, a municipal advocacy organization, is troubled to learn of the decision to hire Rick Leary as the new GM for OC Transpo. The organization's concerns are based on both allegations of abusive behaviour, as well as a poor record in his previous transit leadership positions.

Students are one of the groups that is most affected by decisions at City Hall, yet time and time again municipal policies seem to ignore students. They prioritize "peak hours" for transit that don't work for student schedules, allow our affordable housing supply to shrink, and raise costs for students like fares.

Making change at the municipal level is a lot more accessible than some may think – join us on Tuesday, Feb. 24th from 5-7:30 in the Galleria on the 4th floor of Nideyinàn on Carleton's campus for a workshop on organizing and advocating for issues that matter to students at City Hall!

Mayor Sutcliffe probably isn't the best choice to be your valentine this year.

His love songs leave a lot to be desired, he's limited your options for bike dates, and put a downer on your transit meet-cutes.

Hopefully next year we have some better options!

Ford and Calandra's appointment of school board supervisors was always about preventing cities from getting in the way of their mission of privatization, so it's not surprising to see them sneakily trying to sell off a school building.

Pasma and Johnson are correct - the community deserves transparency and input into what happens with this site.
