Today is . Around the world, health professionals continue to deliver care in conflict settings, often at great personal risk.

The CFNU extends our solitary to health professionals everywhere and call for the protection of health care workers, patients, and health facilities.

As Howard Catton, ICN - International Council of Nurses CEO reminds us, "Health professionals are not combatants. They are not targets. Protecting them is not only a legal obligation - it is essential to protecting patients, safeguarding health systems and preserving our shared humanity."

Today marks World Humanitarian Day - a day to honour humanitarian workers and people affected by crises around the world.

Despite international humanitarian law, attacks on nurses, doctors, patients and medical facilities continue. The CFNU is calling on the government of Canada to use their role as international leaders to uphold this critical protection. In 2026 alone, 911 health workers and patients have lost their lives to attacks on health care across 19 countries and territories. And nearly 1486 others have suffered injuries.
