This Learning Lab explores the University of Alberta Museums' (UAM) 2012 Christmas in July event - when bright red collection disaster preparedness bins brimming with tools and supplies were distributed across all of its then 29 collections, marking a major milestone for collections risk management at the University of Alberta. In the 14 years since, the need for collection emergency preparedness has only increased. While some opportunities and challenges presented are unique to a distributed academic museum system, the need to adapt to increasingly strained resources is a shared reality. This presentation describes the UAM’s iterative approach to collections risk management and what they have learned in recent years.
