La semaine dernière, l’Association canadienne pour la conservation et la restauration des biens culturels (ACCR-CAC), en collaboration avec l’Association canadienne des restaurateurs professionnels (ACRP-CAPC), l’Association des musées canadiens (AMC-CMA) et l’Association des musées de l’Ontario (AMO-OMA), a soumis des lettres demandant le maintien du programme de conservation et de gestion du patrimoine culturel du Collège Fleming.

À la suite du report de la rentrée d’automne 2026, nos organisations demandent au Collège Fleming de respecter son engagement à rouvrir le programme à l’automne 2027 et invitent le gouvernement de l’Ontario à veiller à ce que les petits programmes spécialisés qui répondent à d’importants besoins de main-d’œuvre provinciaux et nationaux soient soutenus dans le cadre du système de financement de l’enseignement postsecondaire.

Figurant parmi les deux seuls programmes de formation en conservation au Canada — et étant le seul programme collégial du pays — le programme de conservation et de gestion du patrimoine culturel de Fleming joue un rôle essentiel dans la formation des professionnels qui prennent soin des collections des musées, galeries, archives, bibliothèques et institutions patrimoniales partout au Canada.

La perte d’une seule cohorte peut avoir des conséquences importantes. Les programmes spécialisés dépendent de la continuité de l’expertise du corps professoral, des installations, des partenariats institutionnels, des stages et du recrutement étudiant. Protéger ce programme, c’est aussi protéger la capacité à long terme du Canada à prendre soin de son patrimoine culturel.

Nous encourageons nos membres et nos collègues du secteur patrimonial à lire la lettre ouverte, à la partager largement et à continuer de faire entendre leur appui à la formation en conservation au Canada.

Last week, the Canadian Association for Conservation of Cultural Property (CAC-ACCR), together with the Canadian Association of Professional Conservators (CAPC), the Canadian Museums Association (CMA), and the Ontario Museum Association (OMA), submitted letters calling for the continuation of Fleming College’s Cultural Heritage Conservation and Management program.

Following the deferral of the program’s Fall 2026 intake, our organizations are urging Fleming College to honour its commitment to reopen the program in Fall 2027, and asking the Government of Ontario to ensure that small, specialized programs serving important provincial and national workforce needs are supported within the postsecondary funding system.
As one of only two conservation training programs in Canada — and the country’s only college-level pathway — Fleming’s Cultural Heritage Conservation and Management program plays a critical role in preparing the professionals who care for museum, gallery, archive, library, and heritage collections across Canada.

The loss of even one cohort matters. Specialized programs depend on continuity of faculty expertise, facilities, institutional partnerships, placements, and student recruitment. Protecting this program is about protecting Canada’s long-term capacity to care for its cultural heritage.

We encourage our members and colleagues across the heritage sector to read the open letter, share it widely, and continue speaking in support of conservation education in Canada.

This Learning Lab explores the University of Alberta Museums' (UAM) 2012 Christmas in July event - when bright red collection disaster preparedness bins brimming with tools and supplies were distributed across all of its then 29 collections, marking a major milestone for collections risk management at the University of Alberta. In the 14 years since, the need for collection emergency preparedness has only increased. While some opportunities and challenges presented are unique to a distributed academic museum system, the need to adapt to increasingly strained resources is a shared reality. This presentation describes the UAM’s iterative approach to collections risk management and what they have learned in recent years. ⁠

The Conservator is responsible for the preservation of the Museum’s large and diverse collections of artifacts and specimens. Reporting directly to the Senior Conservator, they work closely with staff members throughout the Museum to provide optimum standards for display, handling, and maintenance of the Museum’s collections.
