Food is Fuel and what you eat during the postpartum period can dictate how you feel and heal! Keep some of these key nutrition tips when preparing for your postpartum recovery…

Iron: we lose a lot of blood during birth. It’s essential to restore your iron supplies to keep your energy levels up. This can also help combat postpartum depression and anemia.

Protein-rich foods: keeps energy levels up in those early sleepy days, and is also essential for tissue repair.

Omega 3’s: essential for breastfeeding/chestfeeding parents! Great for baby’s brain development and could also help with symptoms of postpartum mood disorders.

Eat/drink your liquids! water helps in the recovery period and with reducing PP swelling. Drink water with an electrolyte booster to make sure you’re not reducing your blood sodium concentration. Eat your water- smoothies and soups are a great way to increase your liquid intake and get some extra nutrients in!

**Make sure you are consuming a sufficient amount of calories a day if you are lactating. You need more calories during lactation than you did during your entire pregnancy!

The postpartum period can be full of surprises, the dreaded night sweats being one of them…

These are the real deal. Postpartum night sweats can vary greatly from person to person. Some tips and tricks to stay comfortable:

1- make sure you have a mattress protector (you can get some disposable ones at the pharmacy!)

2-stay hydrated! ESPECIALLY if you’re breastfeeding/chestfeeding. These night sweats can result in your body loosing a lot of fluids. Bonus points if you’re adding a source of electrolytes to your fluids (coconut water, electrolyte packets, Gatorade)

3- sleep in some lightweight breathable pyjamas.

4- put down a towel to sleep on so if you wake up in the middle of the night all sweaty, you can quickly switch it up for a dry one and stay comfortable.

If you’ve got a new parent in your life and you’re looking for ways to help out, consider one of these options! Not everyone is in need of the same support so if you’re wondering how you can help, just ask! Some new parents would want nothing more than for you to hold their baby while they take a shower. Others may not want others holding baby for the first few weeks. Some people need the space and a listening ear to process their birth experience… Support comes in many different ways.

Have you heard of Post-Weaning Depression? We often talk about the major hormonal shift people experience during the postpartum period but rarely do we talk about the OTHER major hormonal shift. A lot of research still needs to be done but it’s time we start talking about it. PWD symptoms are thought to be caused by the hormonal fluctuations a lactating person experiences once they’ve stopped breastfeeding/chestfeeding. Anxiety, mood swings, insomnia are just a few of the symptoms a person may experience.
