October 15 marks , a time to celebrate the impact of peer support and recognize lived and living experience as a valuable form of expertise. Peer support creates opportunities for understanding, hope and connection in health care, education, workplaces and communities.

At Grandview Kids, our Family Engagement Team is made up of peer navigators who are parents, caregivers and graduates with lived experience. They provide peer support, mentoring and education, helping create a welcoming and supportive environment for families as they navigate their Grandview journey. Wherever you are in that journey, there is a community ready to welcome and support you. Thank you to our incredible peer navigators for the care, compassion and connection they bring to the children, youth and families we serve!

October marks , a time to recognize the vital role occupational therapists (OTs) play in supporting individuals at every stage of life.

At Grandview Kids, OT’s support children and youth with a wide range of physical and developmental needs. For children, “occupations” include activities related to productivity, such as school and play; self-care, like dressing and hygiene; and leisure, such as participating in sports or community events.

Here is a quote from Grandview Kids occupational therapist, Suvaathy V.:

“What I love most about being an occupational therapist is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the everyday lives of children and their families. Working at Grandview Kids allows me to collaborate with families and an incredible multidisciplinary team to support each child’s unique strengths, build their confidence and help them participate in the things that matter most to them. I love that every day brings new opportunities to learn, grow and celebrate the small but meaningful milestones that make a big difference. Being part of a team that values family-centred, neurodiversity-affirming care makes my work especially rewarding.”

In this month’s edition of Gather by Grandview Kids, we recognize by sharing Clara’s story. Grandview Kids mom and Family Advisory Council (FAC) member Tanya shares her daughter’s story and how a simple mantra can be a powerful expression of confidence, strength and pride in who you are. Clara’s story reminds us of the importance of embracing who we are and sharing our joy, kindness and determination with the world.

This edition also highlights our Ability Acceptance Presenter and Archivist, Mitchell Daniels, in recognition of . Mitchell shares his lived experience and information about hydrocephalus, helping raise awareness about disability and inclusion through our Ability Acceptance Program, encouraging others to become Inclusion Allies and help raise awareness about conditions like hydrocephalus.

This month, we’re excited to highlight an opportunity at Grandview Kids through the Brain-Computer Interface (BCI), which uses an Emotiv headset to detect brain activity and turn it into simple commands that can control technology. BCI can offer children another way to interact with technology through activities such as gaming, art and music. We’re looking for current and past Grandview Kids clients who are interested in trying BCI and helping us explore how this technology could be used in our programming. This opportunity is outside the scope of regular clinical services, although sessions will be administered by a trained Grandview Kids team member.

“I love being an occupational therapist because I get to be immersed in the community and work alongside families, educators and community partners to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children. I especially love being in schools, understanding the environments where children spend so much of their time and collaborating with staff to support students in ways that are practical and meaningful. Most of all, I love helping children work toward goals that truly matter to them and getting to witness their hard work, growth and successes along the way.”

October 6 marks , a time to celebrate individuals living with cerebral palsy (CP). CP is a lifelong neurological condition that affects movement, muscle tone and coordination.

At Grandview Kids, we celebrate the strength and resilience of people with CP and thank Team Grandview for their continued support of children, youth and families in our community. For families, a CP journey can begin with questions, uncertainty and a desire to better understand how to support their child.

On our blog, we share one family’s experience participating in the CP Integrated Neuroscience Discovery Network (CP-NET) research project. CP-NET collects information about children with different types of CP to help researchers and clinicians better understand the condition and support the development of future treatments and therapies. Families are not just participants in research, they are partners in building knowledge that can help support future generations.
