PUBLIC ADVISORY | Break-and-Enters
Durham Regional Police has seen a large spike in residential break-and-enters throughout the Region. Typically, suspects are breaking into homes through the rear sliding door. A large portion of targeted homes back onto green spaces and parks. A large amount of these occurrences are happening in the night between midnight and 4:00 a.m.
The suspects involved in these break-and-enters have been primarily targeting high end jewelry and currency. It is believed that the suspects will park a distance away from the residence and walk to their target home, using the park or green space that is found behind their intended target for access.
How to protect yourself:
- Residents with high end jewelry and/or currency in their homes should utilize a secure safe or safety deposit box that cannot be easily removed from the home.
- Ensuring all windows and doors are closed and locked.
- Ensure your residence exterior is well lit and has cameras that are positioned at both the front and rear entries.
- If possible, secure your home with an audible alarm or security system.
- If possible, install motion lighting on the exterior of your residence.
- If possible, install shatter proof glass film on your doors/windows.
- If you are away, or out of town for a period of time, ask your neighbours to keep an eye on your property.
