What happens when wildlife meets a fence?

Join us in the Carden Alvar, a globally rare ecosystem, and help us investigate how fences can influence the way wildlife moves through the landscape!

At the workshop, you’ll:
• Set up trail cameras and learn how they’re used to monitor wildlife
• Map fences and record different fence types and designs
• Investigate how wildlife interacts with and moves around fences
• Learn how trail camera footage and mapping can help us understand wildlife movement

And your work doesn’t stop when you leave! Review the trail camera footage online from the comfort of your own home and help identify the wildlife captured by the cameras.

Your observations can help us better understand which fences wildlife can cross, which ones they avoid, and where fences may be creating barriers to movement.

Come explore the Carden Alvar, follow the wildlife, and help us uncover the story written across the landscape!

Want to have a say in local conservation? Join our Youth Council!

Are you a young person between the ages 15-30 who cares about nature, wildlife, and making a difference in your community?

Our Youth Council is looking for young people to help shape our youth stewardship programs and conservation projects. This is your chance to bring your ideas to the table, work alongside other young people who care about the environment, and help decide what we do next.

As a Youth Council member, you can:
• Help shape future workshops, events, and projects
• Share your ideas about how we can get more young people involved in conservation
• Get hands-on experience with local conservation work
• Meet other youth who care about nature
• Turn your ideas into real projects and action

No previous conservation experience required - just curiosity, enthusiasm, and a willingness to get involved.

If you’ve ever thought “Someone should do something about that…” - this is your chance to help make it happen.

We would like to take a minute to again celebrate the protection of the Lake Dalrymple Alvar! 📣

The Conservancy extends its deepest gratitude to its partners and funders, including the Greenlands Conservation Partnership program, funded by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks and administered by the Ontario Land Trust Alliance, the MapleCross Fund, Echo Foundation, the Ontario Conservation Accelerator including various funders such as The Schad Foundation, other funders, and the countless individuals who made this achievement possible.

So what is next for this landscape?

▶️ The property requires extensive clean up, which will take place in the fall when the temperatures are cooler.

▶️ Trails are to be mapped and formally established.

▶️ Mapping and inventories of invasive species, safety hazards, species and more.

▶️ Then comes gates and fencing (including eventually removing some existing fencing within the 430-acres).

▶️ A formal nature reserve unveiling will take place in 2027, at which point the land will officially be open to the public to visit.
