IN BLOOM: Canadian Buffaloberry, one of the first spring flowers. This shrub grows 0.5-3 m tall. Tiny flowers appear before the leaves. This is the first source of pollen and nectar for many insects, like this ant. Occurs in pine-spruce forests. Male & female flowers grow on separate bushes. Found on several of our conservation easements.
