What a fantastic way to wrap up another great scouting year!

This past weekend, all sections of the 1st Okotoks Scouts came together for our annual year-end camp. The weather cooperated for our Saturday activities, and although the rain arrived on Sunday, everyone showed true scouting spirit and made the best of it!

Throughout the weekend, our youth had the opportunity to develop and practice a variety of outdoor skills, including:

🛶 Water skills and canoeing
🔪 Knife skills and outdoor cooking
🧭 Orienteering, compass, and GPS navigation
🪢 Lashing and knot tying
🔥 Campfire songs, skits, and traditions

Of course, no scout camp would be complete without plenty of wide games, teamwork, laughter, and group activities for everyone to enjoy!

A huge thank you goes out to all of our dedicated Scouters for the countless hours they have volunteered throughout the year. Your commitment, leadership, and enthusiasm make these experiences possible and help create lasting memories for our youth.

Thank you to all our scouting families for another fantastic year. We hope to see all of our Scouts return next season, and we wish everyone a safe, fun, and adventurous summer!

We had the opportunity to observe a small bat colony this weekend at our year end camp and our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts got to see them in action!

Bats are vital insect predators, expert navigators using echolocation, and an important part of healthy ecosystems.

The more we learn about bats, the more we appreciate the role they play in our communities.

Quick facts: did you know that,

There are at least 9 species of bats in Alberta

Most bats in southern Alberta eat insects

One bat can eat hundreds of mosquitoes in one hour

Bats are nocturnal (awake at night)

Baby bats are called pups

Most bats have one baby per year

Bats can live for many years (sometimes decades)

Bats are very clean animals and groom themselves

Bats use echolocation to find insects in the dark

Bats often move between different roosts

Bats do not build nests like birds

Bats like living near water because that’s where insects are

Bats help farmers, campers, and communities by eating pests

Bats are shy and usually avoid people
