Once again, it's Wild Parsnip season. Wild Parsnip burns and scars both people and pets, spreads, and is invasive! Wild Parsnip is primarily found around areas that are not mowed, along ditches, culverts, park edges, creeks, and fallow fields. If contact occurs, immediately flush with water and cleanse the skin. Avoid sunlight to the affected area until it is washed clean of the plant oils. The plant oils will cause phyto-photo-dermatits (sun-induced chemical burns).
Both giant hogweed and wild parsnip are phototoxic, meaning their sap can discolour, blister and burn the skin. Giant Hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) is a large plant, but although grand and showy in its appearance, it is an invasive plant that you don't want to touch. Also in the same family, Apiaceae – the carrot family, is wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa), another invasive species to avoid.
