“You need to be in isolation for an uncertain amount of time! At that time you can NOT be in contact with anyone other than your guardians and if they have so much as a sniffle or cold sore, they will not be allowed in your room.” This was the reality we were in 5 years ago when Liam went for transplant. The isolation was because his immune system was wiped out and a simple cold could have killed him. We were in for 40 days and for Liam that was essentially the size of a jail cell as he never got to leave that room.
Given the uncertain times I want to encourage everyone to take this very seriously as any one of us could have a loved one put into a very dire situation. I know the thought of isolating is daunting, but I can tell you from experience you can do it, and you need to do it. It will go very slowly initially until you find your routine. Reconnect with your kids, your family and have social hangouts online (pretty fun). We will all come out of this with great strength, perspective, unity and a better outlook on life because we all helped slow this down.
Full disclosure, until today we have been pretty flexible with our kids playing with friends outside and a bit indoors as well. I am writing this post because we felt the stern warning today and know we need to follow these guidelines and also try to guide others. None of us will be perfect at it, but be very aware of your decisions and you will make an impact.
