YU on the North Shore is committed to its 20-year reputation as an asset to City of North Van Mayor & Council, City staff, local businesses, fellow youth agencies and non-profit groups, local families, community volunteers, and a wide network of young people. Our YU North Shore staff and volunteers are motivated by the example of Jesus to love and care for vulnerable people in our community, and to welcome those of every background into full participation. While youth will be exposed to the ideals we hold dear (because they are a part of our core values), adoption of beliefs is not required and is part of each individual journey. In appropriate outside-of-school contexts, YU North Shore staff and volunteers sometimes pray with youth, share about their relationship with Jesus, and ask about the youth’s spiritual perspectives; it is engrained in the Christian faith to respect the diverse community we live in, and YU staff and volunteers live this out. We believe vulnerability affects people regardless of religion, race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, economic status, physical and mental ability, national origin, and political ideology. YU exists to serve, support, and partner with the community. YU includes and supports transgender and LGBTQ2S+ youth in their organization. YU welcomes young people with disabilities and connects with indigenous youth. Every young person is welcome. YU is an open door to a safe, loving space. Ultimately, YU is here to help young people discover their potential. If they feel alone, marginalized, vulnerable, or just need somewhere fun but safe to connect to, YU staff and volunteers walk alongside them, help them learn life skills, and support their growth as a person, year after year.
