Did you know that urban runoff and combined sewer overflows are among the largest contributors of pollution to waterways? Urban and industrial development has removed natural vegetation around səlilwət (Burrard Inlet).

Now, rainwater is directed into pipes, ending at 400 stormwater outfalls and 28 combined sewer overflow outfalls that carry untreated stormwater, sewage, and toxins directly into səlilwət.

Dropped by the Capilano Mall rain garden to check in after heavy rains last night. No standing water! I did a little maintenance but still need to do a fall clean up. A local dropped by to let me know she had seen a river otter eating a salmon in MacKay Creek just across the street! ❤️ 🐟 🦦

Lovely article about a new rain garden in the City of Vancouver. While rain gardens aren’t meant to accommodate massive rainstorms, they can definitely help out!

With increasingly large deluges of rainfall that overwhelm stormwater systems, we need climate adapted infrastructure. Rain gardens can are part of the response, adding buffers for the stormwater system while supporting biodiversity and improving water quality. I love this!

North Shore Rain Garden Project

Inspired by a campaign to install 12,000 rain gardens in the Seattle/Puget Sound region of Washington State, in 2017, Simon Fraser University Faculty of Environment researcher Dr. Joanna Ashworth established the North Shore Rain Garden Project (NSRGP) to engage and involve the community in their design and construction.

Rain gardens have been part of the integrated stormwater and watershed management plans and green infrastructure development in the City and District of North Vancouver and the District of West Vancouver for several years. Dr. Ashworth and a graduate student in ecological restoration are collaborating with North Shore municipalities, streamkeepers and other NGOs, and corporate partners, to promote and expand the installation of rain gardens in both public and residential areas.

The NSRGP aims to increase awareness of the benefits of rain gardens, educate citizens about the resources available to help in creating rain gardens on their properties, and encourage participation in the planning, installation and maintenance of several planned community demonstration rain gardens. A research component of the project will examine water flow and quality before and after installation.

Guiding the NSRGP is an advisory team of North Shore residents with a diverse skill set in stewardship, horticulture and landscaping, engineering, ecological restoration, and communications and community relations. The team will assist with the planning, planting, monitoring, maintenance, communication, and public education aspects of demonstration rain garden builds.
