NatureKids BC

NatureKids BC The family nature exploration club BC Nature and Nature Vancouver formed the Young Naturalists’ Club (YNC) in 2000 as a program of Nature Vancouver.

In 2006, YNC spun into an independent registered charity and it was re-named NatureKids BC in 2015. NatureKids BC has now expanded from one nature club in Vancouver to almost thirty clubs across the province.

💚We are grateful to the Coquitlam Foundation for supporting family nature connections in Coquitlam through their community grants program!

We are incredibly grateful to the supporters who continue to help us get kids and their families outdoors all across British Columbia. Without their generosity, we would not exist.

Through donations, sponsorship, in-kind services, and volunteerism, these generous individuals and organizations ensure that more than 1,750 families each year get opportunities to explore and connect with nature across the province.

✨Explorer Day Highlight: Mother’s Day Bird Friendly Picnic at Holland Park✨

We had a fabulous day learning about birds during our Mother’s Day bird friendly picnic! The Vancouver Avian Research Centre hosted some very fun games teaching kids about the interactions between cats and birds along with feathers and other great resources.

Our focus was on the importance of coexistence and learning about local species such as hummingbirds, crows and Canada geese. What can you do to help our feathery neighbours?

🌊Happy World Ocean Day! To celebrate, check out these fun facts about puffins from the NatureWILD Spring 2021 issue.

Puffins are pelagic birds (meaning they live in the open ocean) and pursue their prey while swimming in the ocean. Puffins are part of a family of diving birds, the Alcidae, that live off the coasts of North America.

In B.C., up to 26,000 pairs of tufted puffins breed on Triangle Island, off the northwest point of Vancouver Island. Because it is home to B.C.’s largest seabird colony, Triangle Island is an ecological reserve open only to researchers. Puffins are also found on other remote islands off northwest Vancouver Island and the south end of Haida Gwaii.

🌊Celebrate Ocean Week Canada 🪸

Ocean Week Canada is a public celebration of the ocean coast to coast to coast!

Check out these Canadian ocean facts:

🌊Canada includes more than seven million square kilometres of ocean and more than 200,000 kilometres of coastline!

🌊Canada's oceans feature diverse marine life and ecosystems, including sponges, deep-sea corals, and extensive marine habitats that serve as home to a wide range of whale and dolphin species.

🌊In the Pacific Ocean off British Columbia, there are massive, 9,000-year-old glass sponge reefs that were thought to have gone extinct elsewhere 100 million years ago.

🌊In NatureWILD’s Summer 2020 issue we dove into the world of sea anemones!

The sea anemone [a NEM ah nee] has the same name as a flower. The sea anemone got its name from a flower 🌸: the anemone or windflower. Anemos is the Greek word for wind. Most species of anemones produce feather-like seeds that are scattered by the wind.

The anemone has a simple body: no arms, legs, or head, just a tube with a mouth at the top and a fringe of tentacles. Most of the time, the flat base of the anemone remains attached to a rock 🪨or some other surface. But if the water quality changes or a predator approaches, it can move, even without arms or legs.

✨Explorer Day Highlight: Picnic & BioBlitz at ƛ̓éxətəm Regional Park ✨

Our picnic, exploration of ƛ̓éxətəm Regional Park (pronounced tla-hut-um), formerly Colony Farm, was a relaxing event full of sunshine and families from near and far. We learned about bats, co-existing with nature, what this land looked like and some of the history of the environment and peoples that lived and live here.

We were also lucky enough to be offered a chance to interact with the endangered 🐌 Oregon forest snail! They were slimy, snail-like and cute! Sharing food we reflected on how we felt about being in nature together. Words such as warm, curious, calm and hungry were shared.

Thank you to our partners in this event: Lower Coquitlam River Nature Association First Nation, , and

A very special thank you to the Port Coquitlam Community Foundation for supporting this event through their community grants program.
