June is . Celebrating this month means going beyond reflection, it requires active learning, unlearning, and listening to Indigenous voices.

If you are looking for ways to deepen your understanding of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis histories in British Columbia and Alberta, here are a few incredible, free resources to explore:

📖 Free Courses & Tools:
• University of Alberta’s 'Indigenous Canada' MOOC (Free 12-week course)
• Native-Land.ca (Interactive map to learn whose traditional territories live on)
• UBC’s 'Reconciliation Through Indigenous Education' course
• Outdoor Learning Store's collection of indigenous books and resources for outside and inside of the classroom

🌲 BC-Specific Learning:
• First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC) for authentic book lists
• First Peoples’ Cultural Council Maps for local language and arts tracking

🏔️ Alberta-Specific Learning:
• Empowering the Spirit for treaty and history education
• Walking Together (Alberta Teachers' Association) collection

Let’s commit to continuous learning this June and every month after.

Do you most often think of food as a commodity, a public good, or a human right? 🌱

How can we learn from Indigenous worldviews to be kind and respectful to plants? These perspectives shape how we think about Food Systems Governance and remind us that the way we grow, share, and access food is deeply connected to community, care, and reciprocity.

Government laws and policies shape the way our food systems function, which is why it matters to imagine better systems together. Local examples like the Food Commons in Revelstoke, BC show how communities can share land, honour Indigenous foodways, and strengthen food security and resilience.

Read more about our learning on the blog and follow our Food Systems Literacy series for more. Next up, back to basics: What are food systems activities?

🍓 There are many stories of a strawberry. We shared a sad story of a strawberry in our workshop, one where the strawberry is wasted and ends up in landfill 🗑️💔

We asked participants to rewrite the story of this strawberry, and we were delighted by all the creative solutions! ✨

Making jam 🍓🥄, freezing or drying strawberries ❄️☀️, buying smaller amounts of locally grown berries 🧺, growing your own 🌱, sharing extras with neighbours (or even squirrels 🐿️💕) — the ideas were thoughtful, fun, and inspiring!

We hope the teachers who explored these ideas can bring a new strawberry story to their own learners 🍓📚🌍

Last week, Elements had the exciting privilege and pleasure to join many other outdoor and environmental educators at the Outdoor Learning Conference 2026 ! 🙌🏼

Gathering in Banff, we joined in several circles to learn from our fellows, as well as to teach others.

We shared our workshop "How food can connect us to climate and place" with several keen learners. Sharing strawberries to eat and also sharing stories of strawberries was a fulfilling experience. 🍓🍓🍓

Many people said the mindful eating exercise is something they will take back to their school - Thank you to those who joined and shared with us! 🙌🏼

A bonus for us was finding a wild strawberry plant in the forest just after our workshop ✨

Thank you to
.canada, for putting on this outstanding event.

By taking Zero Waste Place, students in grades K to 2 become everyday environmental heroes as they help Rachel Rabbit navigate the world of garbage bins, compost, recycling, and the landfill. Through hands-on learning and fun activities, students discover how small actions can make a big difference for our planet. 🌎🐰

Fly away home 🦋

Another kind and creative TRASHformation from a Grade 2–3 class! We love how students used an old binder divider to create shimmering butterfly wings ✨ A great reminder that everyday items can become something beautiful with a little imagination and creativity.
