Thanks to all the great volunteers at BAYSAR, I was able to take a month away from the day-to-day operations of BAYSAR to work on a new song. Like last year when I released 'Being a Boomer Ain't Bad', the proceeds from this new song will go to the charities that work with BAYSAR to provide Project Lifesaver. (See my website stanfrench.org for details.)

My new song is called "WAR, The Moral Wounds". The song and music video will be released May 28. I wrote the lyrics from the perspective of a combat pilot writing home to his wife. Although he continues to fly his missions he expresses how he questions fighting in an unjust war of choice and how he is being affected. The song also speaks to the destructive futility of countries starting wars of aggresion.

Here's my cover art for the song and music video. The original picture was taken on my first day of work during my deployment, Nov 1, 2007, in my office in the Role 3 Hospital of the Kandahar Airfield. I was a mental health nurse therapist. You may think that I used my mental health expertise to write the lyrics. The irony is that I wrote the original draft of the lyrics in 1975 when I was a university student and the Vietnam War had recently ended. This just seemed like the right time to dig it out and record the song.

One of my fellow musicians who provided feedback during the mixing process described the song as "haunting and powerful". With luck, a good launch for the song will help promote and support the work of BAYSAR in providing Project Lifesaver to North Bay and area. I look forward to sharing my new song with all of you on May 28!

BAYSAR had a successful Project Lifesaver exercise Feb 24. The picture is of our debrief back at our BAYSAR training facility. The map on the TV shows a record of our search in CALTOPO. We had 3 search teams with receivers and no air support for this exercise. What's the next best thing to air support for a radio frequency search...? that would be searching from a height of land. The yellow cone on the map was drawn by our acting incident commander after receiving a report of a signal with a bearing of 240 degrees from the team at the North Bay Lookout; a place with a great vantage point high above the north end of the city. Our target (a BAYSAR member playing the part of a missing person) was found about two kilometers away and almost exactly in line with that initial report. The total time to find our target near Hwy 11 and 17 (at night, minus 15C, and snowing) was 26 minutes. It probably would have been quicker if this was a real missing person case. Extra time was devoted to training but regardless, finding someone in less than 30 minutes is probably going to eliminate the risk of severe injury or death; which is why we use Project Lifesaver technology.

BAYSAR will be running a Project Lifesaver training exercise tonight in North Bay. We will have the EMS C.A.M.P. vehicle parked at the old Widdifield SS parking lot as our Command Post. If you happen to see our members out in the area with our tracking equipment there is no need for concern. There's no active search.

Officials with local Project Lifesaver program now training others

Project Lifesaver has become a success story on a couple of fronts locally.

Sirens in the Park:

Thanks to Chief Todd Daley for inviting BAYSAR and CASARA North Bay.

With the help of Al Rivet, BAYSAR spent Aug 16-17 educating the public about what we do as search and rescue volunteers, Project Lifesaver, ground SAR with the Ontario Search and Rescue Volunteer Association (OSARVA), working with Emergency Management Ontario as part of Ontario Corp, responding to Canadian emergencies as part of the Humanitarian Workforce, and our role in CASARA North Bay (Civil Air Search and Rescue Association). There was also demonstrations of how Project Lifesaver works to find missing vulnerable persons and compare the technology to searching for a missing aircraft using an Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT). This was also a great chance to interreact with police, fire, EMS, and other emergency services professionals.
