Talking Together Program - Nipissing/Parry Sound Area

Talking Together Program - Nipissing/Parry Sound Area Talking Together recognises the capacity of kin
network to protect Aboriginal children and
emphasises the importance of cultural continuity in
placements.

The process is a less intrusive method of dealing with
family problems and protection issues, alleviating the
need for the often costly and adversarial Family Law
Court system. The participants and community work as a group to
resolve issues toward healing. The process looks at who has been affected and how
they have been affected by the problems the family is
experiencing; thus, provides an oppor

tunity for
participants to work
together to repair the
harm. Serving the following First Nations
(On & Off Reserve):
Nipissing, Temagami, Dokis, Henvy Inlet, Magnetawan,Shawanaga, Wasauksing,
Moose Deer & Wahta

What is the Talking Together Program...

Talking Together is a Restorative approach to dealing with Child Welfare issues. Because of reforms to the Child, Youth and Family Services Act, aboriginal children are now more at risk of being taken from their families. If a child under the age of six years is in care for a period of 12 months (it need not be continuous) the child is in danger of becoming a Crown Ward. This means that all parental rights are lost to the parents and in many cases the children are lost to the community. In our remote communities where Courts are only held once every three months it does not take long before the clock runs out. Time is of the essence. We need a better way. We think we are moving in that direction.
