There is nothing funny about sexual assault. It is not a punchline. It is not something to laugh off. And calling it a joke doesn’t erase the harm it can cause.
There are two things to consider when you make a r**e joke:
1. Survivors around you may hear it and feel unsafe. They may wonder whether you take sexual violence seriously, whether you would believe them if they disclosed their experiences, or whether they can trust you.
2. Perpetrators around you may hear it and feel validated. When sexual violence is treated as entertainment, it can reinforce the idea that it isn’t serious, that it is acceptable to laugh about, or that the people who commit it won’t be held accountable.
You might think it’s just a joke. But you don’t know who is listening, what they have survived, or what message you’re sending to the people around you.
You don’t have to be a survivor to understand that sexual violence is not a punchline. You just have to care about the people around you.
PSA: Calling women “whores” isn’t cool either. Degrading women, policing their bodies, and using misogynistic language doesn’t make you edgy or funny. It contributes to a culture that devalues women and excuses disrespect.
👉🏼 Do better. Be better. And stop confusing cruelty with comedy.
