ORMTA is a not-for-profit provincial organization managed by a volunteer council and comprised of more than 1,300 Registered Music Teachers and related members across Ontario. ORMTA is affiliated with the national association, the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers' Associations (CFMTA). The aim of ORMTA is to encourage and provide the highest calibre of music education possible and to promote
high standards of music in each community. To become a Registered Music Teacher (RMT), one must hold a degree or diploma from a recognized university or conservatory, or meet the necessary qualifications set down by the registering province, thus ensuring a high level of training and a commitment to professionalism. The Ontario Registered Music Teachers' Association was founded in 1885, re-established in 1936 and finally incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1946. ORMTA presently consists of 1,375 members divided among 9 Zones which are further divided into 38 Branches. ORMTA is managed by the volunteer Provincial Council and administered on a day-to-day basis by the Provincial Secretary/Registrar. (Registered Music Teacher) by Parliamentary Act 1946 (chapter 131). ORMTA annual membership fees include membership in the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers' Associations (CFMTA). CFMTA is a Canada-wide federation of private music teachers encompassing ten provinces, with over 3,200 members.
