Venus and Jupiter are as close to each other as possible for 2026. Niagara Centre member Philip Downey took this picture last night, from Lakeside Beach in Port Dalhousie. Tonight, the two brightest planets in our solar system will be fractionally closer to each other. Keep watching this month as they rapidly separate. Venus is the brighter one of the pair.

Our next monthly meeting will be on June 18, at Heartland Forest in Niagara Falls. “Beginners Learning Together” will start at 6. Our general meeting will start at 7. Our guest speakers will be John Nemy and Dustin Bischke. Their talk is called “Island in the Stars”. They say “Astronomy offers a perspective like no other discipline. From the islands of the Pacific, to the pristine skies of Chile, this multi-media science presentation takes you on a unique voyage through the cosmos.” Astronomy became a passion for John when he moved to British Columbia, stargazing from mountaintops with his partner Carol. In 2012, on Hornby Island, BC, their Island Stars Observatory saw first light offering public star nights. App developer by day and hobby astrophotographer by night, Dustin captures the night sky from Cold Lake, Alberta, where he has been photographing aurora and deep-sky with backyard telescopes since 2021. You can find us in the Forest View room.

International Astronomy Day is on April 25. To celebrate, we’ll be at Heartland Forest in Niagara Falls. During the day, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., we’ll be there with our safe solar telescopes to look at the Sun, its spots and flares. At night, we’ll set up south of the parking lot to observe the Moon, planets and stars with our beautiful telescopes. Start time is 8 p.m. It’s free and fun for the whole family. Both events depend on clear skies. If it’s total clouds or raining, the event will be cancelled.
