NFU-O Town Hall: Public Land Leases for Farmers

Online event: Monday, April 27 โ€ข 7 PM - 8 PM EDT

Join the NFU-O to discuss public land leases for farmers and the development of a guide for best practices and standards

NFU-O is developing a guide for public land holders which would provide information on best practice models and leasing standards for diversified farming on public lands in ON. The guide is meant to help public land holders to better understand the needs of small-scale, ecological farmers.

In this meeting, we are gathering current, past and prospective public land farmers to provide feedback on best practice leasing standards on public lands which will inform the development of the resource guide. If you have farmed, are currently farming on or have looked into farming public lands (lands owned and leased out by the government or conservation authorities) we want to hear from you about what you want to see in this guide.

Please note: this open discussion is not an information session on how to start farming on public lands. We will be gathering feedback from participants on:

- the current public farmland lease system
- what's working and not working
- what your needs are (ie housing, infrastructure, long-term leases)
- best practices and leasing standards that public landholders can learn from and build upon.

โœ…๏ธ Council pauses decision on plans for new community in northeast Pickering

Adrian Stocking, president of the National Farmers Union Local 345, said advancing this proposal before completing required studies and planning measures is inconsistent with Ontarioโ€™s Planning Act, the Provincial Policy Statement and Durham Regionโ€™s official plan . . . Destroying farmland would basically create a population without a means to feed itself and protecting this soil should be โ€œof the highest importanceโ€ to council.

Chief Kelly LaRocca of the Missississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation is not backing down on her opposition to the plans.

Pickering council wonโ€™t be making a decision on plans for the cityโ€™s northeast end for at least another month.
