This Pride Month, we celebrate the strength and shout out the brilliance of YMCA staff, volunteers, members, participants, donors, and partners who are part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. At the YMCA, we believe in a world where everyone can show up fully, authentically, and safely. Not just in June, but all year long.

While there has been progress, we also recognize that the work is far from over. Equity isn’t a destination, it’s a journey we must walk together. With compassion as our compass and community as our guide, we recommit to building spaces where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued.

🌟 Four Leaders. Four Legacies. One Purpose. 🌟

Congratulations to Mary Beck, Stephen Butz, Roy Funk and Gavin Hume, K.C., all of whom have been presented with a King Charles III Coronation Medal that recognizes their outstanding service and commitment to the YMCA throughout their lifetimes. Each has made significant contributions to the Y movement locally, nationally and internationally, fulfilling the prestigious award’s criteria of making “a significant contribution to Canada or to a particular province, territory, region or community of Canada, or have made an outstanding achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada.”

Their exemplary leadership in governance or executive roles over decades has helped the Y make an important difference in the lives of our community members, leading to their nominations for the medals by YMCA BC or YMCA Canada. YMCA BC was proud to celebrate all four recipients in a special reception and medal presentation held March 28 at The Vancouver Club — please join us in saluting these incredible YMCA champions on their distinguished accomplishment. 🎉

Meet Tommy Yee, YMCA BC Volunteer Group Fitness Instructor at the Langara Family YMCA...34 years, and counting!

🙌 What’s your 'Y' for volunteering? “An opportunity to give back what I received when I first joined up in the fall of 1986.”

💑 What's your favourite 'Y' memory? “I have many! When I led my first solo fitness class, meeting my wife to be at the Y, watching my son running down the hallway to the child minding room.“
