Literacy New Westminster

Literacy New Westminster A whole community approach involves the entire community working together to embed literacy and learning into everyday life

Literacy New Westminster is an action group dedicated to working in partnership with community groups and organizations to build and enhance local literacy services, programs and networks. The New Westminster Literacy Committee is made up of representatives of a broad cross section of groups; the purpose of the group is to meet regularly during the year to address literacy activities, collaborate

with Literacy initiatives and to network with each other. Task group members bring experience and support from their lives and from the organizations that they represent. To take full advantage of this, the focus of the task group should be on strategic thinking about community and literacy. Task group members are continually addressing questions such as:
• Where are the literacy gaps and opportunities in our community?
• What can we contribute to a possible solution?
• What is the best thing that we can do for people in our community? Objectives
-To identify the learning needs the New Westminster city residents and respond to these by working with others to coordinate and support literacy programs and services.
-Bringing people in the community together to share ideas, resources and experience that builds on existing literacy programs and looks to create new initiatives.
-Improving access to learning opportunities in the community
-By providing opportunities for the community, to improve their own literacy and life-long learning capacities through information sharing, community events, discussions, story sharing and programs

👨‍👩‍👧 Family literacy happens during everyday activities.
"Family literacy refers to the way that parents, children, and extended family members use literacy at home and in the community. Family literacy occurs naturally during the routines of daily living and helps children and adults get things done." - Hayden, R. & Sanders, M. (2007)

🥰 It's about conversations, grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, recycling, walking outdoors, playing games, and so much more!

🧡 “As a parent, I know how much everyday moments –like sharing stories at mealtime– shape confidence and curiosity. Family Literacy Week reminds us that when families learn together through simple routines, they strengthen relationships and develop skills that improve quality of life and last a lifetime.
Our government will continue supporting opportunities for lifelong learning so families can thrive and children have more opportunities to learn, grow and succeed.”

BC Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs
