Following the recent racist intimidation directed at Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc, and the Nation’s acknowledgement of the outpouring of support, the Family Support Institute of BC adds our voice in solidarity. Our support and responsibility to speak out continue beyond the immediate response and beyond the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
We condemn the racist intimidation and residential school denialism directed at Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc in the days leading up to September 30. We stand alongside the Nation, residential school Survivors, intergenerational Survivors, and their families.
Denying or mocking the harms of residential schools deepens the harm carried by families and communities. It undermines the truth that reconciliation depends upon.
Through our work alongside families, we often see firsthand the effects of systemic racism and discrimination. Our Commitment to Anti-Racism calls us to stand beside those affected and add our voices to theirs in solidarity. As an organization rooted in family connection, belonging, and human rights, we have a responsibility to challenge anti-Indigenous racism in our communities and in the systems families navigate. Our commitment to reconciliation must be reflected in our everyday relationships, decisions, and actions.
We encourage everyone to learn from Survivors and Indigenous-led sources, challenge racist misinformation, and support the priorities and leadership of Indigenous communities, beyond September 30. We call on governments and public institutions to respond to intimidation and uphold Indigenous Peoples’ rights and safety. We also call on the RCMP to thoroughly investigate these incidents and pursue accountability to the fullest extent permitted by law, in respectful engagement with the Nation.
To Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc, Survivors, and their families: we stand with you, and we remain committed to listening, learning, and acting in solidarity.
