Wow, what a great open we had to our 2026 Training Weekend! This is an event that we look forward to every year at FSI, ever since our first one held 40 years ago on Bowen Island, BC.

At Training Weekend, our volunteers and staff enjoy a weekend getaway together at a peaceful spot in BC, close to nature, sharing meals and knowledge. We reflect and learn together, with the guidance of seasoned mentors, on the best ways to support families, navigate systems, and break down barriers.

This year, we are gathering hybrid for the first time—participants are joining through a mix of in-person and online. Our team is in Kelowna this year. We are having such a wonderful and emotional time together! This gathering is so good for our soul. We are sharing laughter and shedding tears... hearing stories of pain and stories of triumph... embracing the gift of community.

For generations, First Nations children were taken from their families, communities and cultures through the Indian Residential School System rooted in forced assimilation and cultural elimination. As Chief Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, the Honourable Murray Sinclair helped lead a historic process of truth-telling by listening to the experiences of thousands of Residential School Survivors across the country. In 2015, the Commission released the landmark TRC Final Report and its 94 Calls to Action to redress the legacy of residential schools and advance the process of reconciliation. This National Indigenous History Month, we recognize the Honourable Murray Sinclair’s lifelong commitment to justice, truth, and reconciliation, and reaffirm our shared responsibility to continue advancing the Calls to Action.

Pride started out as a protest.

And in many, many countries around the world, it still is today. It is still illegal in many cities, and still, humans do not back down. That does not mean a lack of fear. Q***r people are ESPECIALLY scared for their lives right now. But it means, in spite of the fear, humans refuse to stay silent and invisible in the midst of oppression.

Pride is a celebration, but it didn't begin that way.

Pride started as a movement for safety, dignity, and equal rights. Many of the people who helped lead that fight were q***r and trans people who were also Black, Indigenous, racialized, poor, or otherwise pushed to the margins.

At its heart, anti-racist parenting is about helping children become more fully themselves, not less.

To know who they are, love who they are, and understand that other people deserve that same freedom.

When children feel secure in their own identity, they are less likely to fear, judge, exclude, or try to suppress people who are different from them. Children who don't feel the need to shrink themselves to belong are less likely to try to make others shrink themselves too.

As parents, our job isn't to make our children conform to the norm. It's to help them become fully themselves while teaching them not to fear, diminish, or silence others who are doing the same.

The fight for 2SLGBTQIAA+ rights is deeply connected to the fight for racial justice. Black, Indigenous, and racialized q***r and trans people continue to experience unique barriers and forms of discrimination, both within society and sometimes within 2SLGBTQIAA+ spaces themselves.

So this Pride Month, let's celebrate 2SLGBTQIAA+ joy, perseverance, culture, and community, while continuing the work to ensure that safety, dignity, belonging, and human rights extend to everyone.

Because every person deserves to be safe, valued, and free to show up as their whole self.

The venn diagram has a LOT of overlap!
Pride was built by Black and Brown and Indigenous people. Pride was also built by the kink and leather communities, which overlaps heavily with various disability communities due to the radical acceptance of body diversity.
