We cannot build rights-respecting environments for Indigenous Peoples, 2SLGBTQIA+ and children within workplaces and homes that refuse to practice reflection, accountability, and justice themselves.

The Alberta government and the Anglican Church have admitted vicarious liability for sexual assaults allegedly committed by the late Father Gordon William Dominey against children held at the Edmonton Youth Development Centre between 1985 and 1990.

Dominey was charged in 2016. At its peak, the criminal case included 15 complainants and more than 30 charges. He died of cancer in 2019, before he could stand trial. A class action on behalf of the men who say he abused them was later certified.

The survivors' lawyer says Dominey had "full rein" of the youth jail with little oversight, and that incarcerated youth were encouraged to seek him out. He also says both the province and the church are now refusing to pay anything, and no damages hearing has been scheduled yet.

These survivors were children in state custody, and the institutions responsible for them failed to protect them. Admitting liability after a decade of delay is not enough. They deserve fair compensation now.

October is 2SLGBTQIA+ History Month in Canada.

Young people consistently tell us that feeling heard matters.

The experiences shared in Undercurrents remind us that creating inclusive schools is not only about policies and programs; it's also about listening when youth speak about what they need.

Sisters in Spirit Day has passed, but our responsibility has not. Families continue to search for answers, survivors continue to advocate for change, and Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people continue to deserve safety and justice.

We must carry the commitment of these past five days forward and ensure remembrance is followed by lasting action.
