It is with deep sadness that we mark the passing of Rhonda Larrabee, Chief of the Qayqayt New Westminster Indian Band.
Rhonda was a courageous and determined leader who fought tirelessly for her Band’s recognition and rightful place in Canada. Her persistence, dignity, and strength ensured that the Qayqayt people’s history and rights were no longer ignored.
She represented Indigenous peoples in New Westminster with grace and clarity, speaking at city events, celebrations, and gatherings to remind us of the true history of this land and the ongoing impacts of colonialism. Rhonda never missed an opportunity to educate, to advocate, and to ensure that the voices of her community were heard. She was invited and spoke at events at Century House.
Our community is better because of her leadership. Her work advanced understanding, respect, and reconciliation in meaningful ways, and we will remain forever grateful for her contributions.
Whenever you met Rhonda she greeted you with a smile. Condolences to her partner Ryan and her family. May her memory continue to guide us toward a more honest and compassionate future.
