Zack’s Crib Community Shelter

Timiskaming has limited to no crisis or safe/warm beds within the district of Timiskaming for people in crisis or at risk of experiencing a temporary homeless situation. The closest supports are either in Timmins or North Bay and access is limited. In addition, those seeking such supports are always disproportionately struggling with a mental health and/or an addiction. We know that best outcomes for success, reintegration and one’s health is when individuals remain close to family, friends and their community. Evidence has shown, that having a safe place to stay for those struggling with mental health and addictions, alleviates pressure on law enforcement and health care resources and reduces crime rates.

Our group of concerned community organizations and volunteers started meeting in late 2018. The coming together was the result of a local business man, Yves Paille who posted on Facebook pleading for action to address a gap in services/support for local residents in crisis and for families like his struggling to support a family member. Quickly establishing a name, “Zack’s Crib” and formalizing a committee this group has begun to develop a work plan to further mobilize the community into action.

To date, we have committee members that includes representation from Keepers of the Circle, Centre de Sante Communautaire du Timiskaming, Canadian Mental Health and Addictions as well as the OPP. We meet on a regular basis, and are quickly building momentum. Our committee has visited a few shelters in the north and have obtained valuable information, insight and support to help move forward.
