Community cook tomorrow !!

9:30am - 12 ish when we will be cooking beef roast and potatoes and carrots

With cookies for desserts! Chocolate chip to be exact !

It’s attached to the Eradication against Poverty Event at the Anglican Hall tomorrow!

Music, some speakers, free food and an amazing artist there keeping track of it all!

Come out to connect, share some food, and stand in solidarity with folks here across Lunenburg County. A place we're so privileged to call home, where neighbours help one another thrive, not just survive. Runs, rain, shine or other. See you there.

Outside the kitchen windows, the trees are just beginning to turn, with deep shades of amber and crimson appearing through the green canopy.

It’s that crisp, beautiful time of year that makes you want to gather somewhere warm, roll up your sleeves, and make something delicious.

We’re aiming for hearty fall fare to fill the Community Fridge, and we need your hands to help with the prep.

Tomorrow morning, Wednesday, October 7, from 9:00 AM to noon, we’re back in the kitchen making meals at 5311 Highway 10 in New Germany.

Come for an hour, stay for the morning, or just drop in to see what we’re making. Coffee and tea are always ready.

And remember, we still have our regular cook-ups on the last Saturday of every month, too.

They say many hands make light work, and our volunteers proved it this morning.

Together, we whipped up a batch of hearty harvest dinners to refill the community fridge. The kitchen smelled incredible while we roasted carrots, grilled peppers, mashed taters, and prepped sliced ham with rye.

We also cooked up a massive batch of sauerkraut, some with bacon and some vegetarian, but all deeply seasoned with garlic, onions, and butter.

What could have been an overwhelming holiday-sized, cooking session felt like a breeze thanks to this amazing crew, along with the neighbours who came by to lend a hand.

Another cook-up done, another good morning of neighbours putting good food to work in the community. Have a wonderful weekend!

Harvest time is here, and we're aiming for hearty fall fare to fill the community fridge.

This Saturday morning, 9 till noon at 5311 Highway 10 in New Germany we're back in the kitchen making meals for our Community Fridge.

So come for an hour, stay for the whole morning to help, or just drop in and see what we're making. Coffee and tea always on the ready.

And there may even be a little story about why the concept or idea of Thanksgiving didn't quite translate when I once tried it in Australia...

We are so happy to be partnering with beyond bandaids for this!

October 17th at the Anglican hall, we will gather, hear each others stories, eat some free hotdogs or hamburgers and bring awareness to something that effects so many. ♥️ 🫂 ♥️

In partnership with The 644 in New Germany, the Beyond Bandaids Initiative will be hosting a special event to mark the United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (UNIDEP).

Observed annually on October 17, this day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of poverty and inequities while promoting dignity, inclusion, solidarity, and action within our communities, as part of a broader global effort. Last year, we hosted the first annual UNIDEP ceremony on the South Shore in Bridgewater. It is our hope to host an event each year in a different municipality in Lunenburg County, working alongside partners from the local community.

Our official event will include stories from community members who will share their lived experiences, combined with personal art, poetry and song. Alongside the official ceremony, attendees will be invited to help in a community cook (preparing meals for the free community fridge/pantry program), children’s games, and a free BBQ to bring people together in a welcoming environment to connect and reflect as a community.

Great turnout this morning - and with a flick of the wrist just shy of a hundred portions of sweet & sour chicken were prepped, packed and stocked in the community fridge!

Plus, a fresh batch of wondrous little-bit-chewy, little-bit-crunchy-on-the-edges cookies.

Seasonal zucchini and apples too, thanks to some kind, enterprising souls. And likewise, thanks to our volunteers, including those who drove a fair distance to lend a hand.

And, in the background through it all, a happy cricket still sounding off from the safety of its known thicket.

Each day for a few more weeks.

The zucchini are winning and we need backup!

This Wednesday morning, 9–noon at 5311 Highway 10, we're coming together for another Community Fridge Cook-Up - turning the harvest bounty into ready-to-eat meals for the community fridge.

Our local farms and gardens have been incredibly generous, but fresh food only helps if we can turn that generosity into something people can actually put on the table.

That's where the kitchen crew comes in.

We need Lunenburg County's seasoned home cooks, kitchen masters, confident choppers, creative improvisers - and anyone who simply enjoys cooking with good people - to help us chop, prep and turn this abundance into healthy meals for the community fridge.

And, as usual, it will be a room full of neighbours putting their kitchen skills, experience and intuition to work - with the coffee and tea pot always ready for whoever comes through the door.

Come for an hour, stay for the morning, or just drop in and see what we're making.

The fridge is waiting. And apparently, so are the zucchinis.

We had another egg-citing morning cooking for our community fridge: breakfast sandwiches, zucchini fritters, and freshly sliced cantaloupes.

A dozen people came out unegg-spectedly and knocked it out of the park, eggs-actly the help we needed.

Special thanks also to those tending the NGRHS school garden for their eggs-tremely kind donations of additional produce they've been growing.

Eggs-quisite work by all, truly demonstrating what our community is made of.
