I know that community members, workers, and travellers have questions about the Kootenay Lake Ferry Service Improvements Project, including on timelines and contracts. I want to thank all the workers who are contributing to building this new ferry, as well as the workers currently operating the M.V. Osprey 2000 and the M.V. Balfour, and thank the community for all your support for this project. Our government is committed to bringing this project to life, and I'm looking forward to riding the new vessel. Please see below for an update from the Ministry of Transportation and Transit:

"The Kootenay Lake Ferry Service Improvements Project includes a new vessel for the route and improvements at both the Balfour and Kootenay Bay ferry terminals, such as improved amenities, additional parking and better access.
As of 2025, the Kootenay Lake ferry improvement project remains budgeted at $117 million. The increase from the initial estimate reflects several factors, including the complexity of the project and its remote location.

Over the past year, construction of the new vessel’s hull and superstructure had been completed. The project has now entered the outfitting phase, which includes the installation of mechanical, electrical and control systems and interior components. It also includes the installation of auxiliary systems bilge and fire pumps and piping, as well as engine cooling, exhaust, and mooring systems.

Work is also being done on the vehicle deck and interior spaces.

Since the vessel contract was awarded, the project has experienced schedule delays, partly due its unique nature.

This project is unique in the following ways:
β€’ Few large inland ferries have been built in B.C. in recent decades.
β€’ Inland waterways are separated from coastal areas by dams, so ferries have historically been built onsite at temporary lakeside shipyards near their operating locations.
β€’ Without permanent shipyard facilities, most of the steel work and all assembly occur outdoors, making progress subject to seasonal and environmental conditions.

In addition to these unique factors, there have been challenges with project delivery by Western Pacific Marine (WPM). On Nov. 10, 2025, WPM was notified that the Ministry of Transportation and Transit was exercising its step-in rights under the design build agreement to complete the work.

The ministry is retaining a project management firm to work with existing subcontractors to complete the vessel. This transition process is already underway.
The ministry will ensure that the vessel meets the highest standards and remains confident the revised in-service date of 2027 will be achieved.

The ministry included accountability measures in the design-build contract, ensuring the contractor is responsible for delivering the vessel within the agreed budget and scope. The contract also provides the ministry with rights to take direct action to address events of default."

Aman Singh is a dear friend and such an incredible advocate. I could not wish for a better person to be our next BCNDP President. Thank you for stepping up Aman!

Dear friends,

Over the past few months, we have watched the world change in ways that feel unsettling. Donald Trump’s presidency has cast a shadow across the world, fueling the rise of MAGA-style politics and emboldening leaders who thrive on division and fear. We nearly saw that same threat here in British Columbia with John Rustad and the BC Conservatives.

We know what happens when hate wins. It divides us, weakens communities, and tears at the very heart of our democracy. But we also know the extraordinary power of what happens when hope wins. Hope brings people together. Hope fuels the hard work of building a society that is fair, equitable, and just. I am grateful that here in B.C., we have a courageous leader in David Eby and a BC NDP government that chooses people over politics, progress over fear, and action over excuses. Every new school, every housing project, every step we take to strengthen health care or protect our environment is proof of what hope in action looks like. This is the kind of leadership and hope that makes me proud to be a New Democrat.

Ten months ago, after losing my seat, I made a choice that I would dedicate myself as an organizer, as a citizen, and as a New Democrat to bringing more good into the world. To building the kind of movement that lifts people up and reflects the very best of who we are. I want my daughter to grow up in a province where leaders are guided by compassion, where communities stand together, and where every child can dream big without fear of being left behind. That is what drives me to keep organizing, to keep fighting, and to be apart of building a movement that believes in people above all else.

Today, I’m asking for your support, because this November at our 48th BC NDP Convention, I will be seeking the honour of serving as the next President of the BC NDP.

I want to thank Aaron Sumexheltza for his dedicated service to our political family. His leadership has been rooted in the values that make our movement strong, values we must carry forward together.

I am proud that in a world where regressive forces are on the rise, we are fighting back and building a province that is striving to be more fair, equitable, and just. But we also face a hard truth. This is a moment of anxiety and uncertainty. If we want to protect what generations of New Democrats have fought for, we must rise to meet the moment.

Our movement needs to listen deeply, grow our tent, and organize relentlessly. We must be ready, not just for the next election, but for this changing world.

I want to help ensure we are ready to elect new and re-elect progressive New Democrat MLAs who reflect the diversity of our province. Ready to fight for working people and the most vulnerable. Ready to make our province and our world more just, equitable, and safe for all.

From my earliest days, my parents taught me that a life worth living is a life defined by openness and compassion. Those values have guided me my entire life, as an activist, a human rights lawyer, and as an MLA. Today, they guide me in asking for your support to continue serving our movement with that same spirit.

New Democrats join me. Let’s organize. Let’s fight for what matters. Let’s keep building a B.C. we can all be proud of.

I hope I can count on your support at convention this November.

In solidarity,
Aman Singh
