The work of seeking permanent protections for the Duncan River Ancient Cedars has morphed into province wide action and the creation of a small but feisty new group called Save What's Left.

Save What's Left believes forestry reform must start with the government's own timber extraction agency, BC Timber Sales (BCTS). BCTS is responsible for more unsustainable logging of primary forest and more logging in community watersheds than any corporate entity. Let's change this.

We are excited to announce that Save What's Left has received a grant from West Coast Environmental Law to support our efforts to protect mature and old forests on BCTS managed lands.

Please have a look at our very comprehensive website for more information, and consider joining our new facebook group. Here are the links:

Forestry reform is the most important existential issue facing British Columbia right now. Be part of the change by registering now for the "The Power of Forests" event happening in Nelson at the Adventure Hotel on Saturday October 5th at noon. Space is limited. This is one of five The Power of Forests events happening around the Province.

I'm honored to be speaking along with two of the most authoritative voices on forestry reform in the province:

Dr. Rachel Holt, forestry ecologist, past Vice-chair of the BC Forest Practices board, and past member of the government's own Old Growth Technical Advisory Panel.

Jennifer Houghton, one of the most important grassroots activists for forestry reform in the province, and co-founder of the Boundary Forest Watershed Stewardship Society.

I plan on presenting a stunning picture of what BC Timber Sales (our government) has been up to in the woods and watersheds around Nelson and make the case that BCTS needs to be radically transformed. I will include a lot of images and video footage that I have not presented before. I will also be speaking at the Kelowna event October 12th.

The paradigm shift in forestry that John Horgan promised just four days before the last provincial election in October 2020 has not happened by most people's accounts. Forestry reform is shaping up to be one of the most pivotal issues in this fall's election. Will the NDP start listening to the overwhelming majority of British Columbians who support a paradigm shift? Will the BC NDP announce some specific legislative reforms they would put into place if they are able to form government again? They will if we put enough pressure on them to do so!

Here are some terribly embarrassing numbers from BC Timber Sales business plan:

Last year, BCTS net profits were just $92.7 million yet they are responsible for roughly 20% of all clearcutting in the province of BC. This current year BCTS is only projecting $37.5 million in net profit. That works out to less than $7 per person for all that ecological destruction and associated heightened wildfire and flooding risk that they are exposing us to.

Here is the real kicker though: BCTS is going to spend $72.9 million on tree planting (silvaculture) so that they can net their $37.5 million! Duh – very strange math BC NDP?

But that is not all. BCTS is projecting their volume of wood sold to go from 4.4 million m3 last year, to 8.7 million m3 in the 2025/26 fiscal year – nearly doubling their amount of clearcutting! Wildfire mitigation and fire-salvage logging is the next pine beetle bonanza folks. BC NDP just put new rules in place to make it easier to log fire-salvage areas - while all the ecologists are say logging burned primary forest is a terrible thing to do. Who do you trust?

Insanity prevails at the BC NDP Ministry of Forests. Even if you don’t care about preserving the very last of the primary forests (ie NOT genetically stunted, burns-like-a-torch, ecologically low value, topsoil deficient tree farms) in BC, we need to stop the economic hemorrhaging that mostly just helps big multinational forestry companies.

Please consider telling David Eby and your MLA to dismantle BC Timber Sales and sign the petition – it is amazing how few of the signatures on this are actually from Nelson.

A source link to the BCTS business plan will be provided in the comments.
