Literacy Central Vancouver Island Literacy is our Legacy. Since 1991, LCVI has been providing learning opportunities to adults, youth and children in the Central Vancouver Island area.

Our used bookstore, Well Read Books, helps fund our programs. We are an inclusive team dedicated to providing equal opportunities for learners. Our programs are volunteer driven and offered free to the public. We recruit and train volunteers to work with children, youth and adults to improve their literacy skills. Our programs include, but not limited to;
• 1 - 1 tutor support for adults, youth, f

amily and Indigenous peoples
• Bear and Beams
• Computer skills
• Working with New Immigrants to Canada (ESL)
• Dungeon and Dragons Youth Learning Series
• Workshops
• Computer Refurbishing Program
• Community Outreach

Our bookstore, Well Read Books, sells gently used donated books and features local authors, with proceeds supporting our programming at LCVI. Our programming would not be possible without the operation of our bookstore, grants, our dedicated volunteers and private donations. We are eternally grateful for the support of our community to help us offer literacy programs to the Central Vancouver Island area.

Help a Child Discover the Joy of Learning!

Literacy Central Vancouver Island is looking for volunteer tutors to support children, youth, and families in our community.

A few hours of your time can make a lasting difference. Volunteers help learners build reading, writing, language, and literacy skills while developing confidence, independence, and a love of learning.

Experience working with children, youth, education, or literacy is highly valued, but we also welcome caring, patient, and committed individuals who are willing to learn and make a positive impact. All volunteers begin with an onboarding process, and must obtain the appropriate CRC.

As a volunteer, you'll become part of a welcoming community dedicated to helping children and families succeed. The rewards are tremendous—not only for the learners you support, but for the volunteers who build meaningful connections and see firsthand the difference literacy can make.

There is something special about a local bookstore.

Long before the term became popular, bookstores served as what many now call a "third space" — places that are neither home nor work, but somewhere people can gather, browse, reflect, learn, and connect with others. They are places of discovery, conversation, and community.

At Well Read Books, we are proud to continue that tradition. More than a used bookstore, Well Read Books helps support literacy programming throughout Central Vancouver Island while providing affordable access to thousands of quality books. Whether you're searching for your next great read, building a library of your own, or simply enjoying a quiet moment among the shelves, there is always something waiting to be discovered.

Every purchase helps support literacy in our community.

Literacy is about much more than reading and writing. Today, literacy includes digital skills, numeracy, understanding forms and documents, finding reliable information, and participating fully in work and community life.

Yet many Canadians continue to face literacy challenges that can affect employment, income, health, and access to services. Strong literacy skills help people build confidence, access opportunities, support their families, and engage more fully in their communities.

At Literacy Central Vancouver Island, we work every day with adults, youth, families, newcomers, and seniors to help build these essential skills.

Food is more than what’s on our plate.
It’s story. It’s memory. It’s connection.
This Nutrition Month, we honour food through a literacy lens —
because understanding food is part of understanding ourselves.
It’s reading a label and knowing what it means.
It’s sharing recipes across generations.
It’s remembering the foods that have always sustained us.
Literacy lives in everyday moments —
in kitchens, around tables, in conversations.
When we strengthen literacy,
we strengthen our ability to care for ourselves, our families, and our communities.
What’s a food that connects you to your story?
