We are doing something pretty interesting this year at Literacy Central Vancouver Island with our Youth & Seniors programming, very reflective of the generation gaps and the disconnects between them.

For our Seniors' programming, we are focusing on Digital Literacy: working with Seniors to get them more comfortable and CONNECTED with technology, as EVERYTHING has moved rapidly into the digital era. From Smartphone use, to Online Safety, Financial Safety/Avoiding Scams, and AI, we are equipping seniors with the tools they need to navigate an era very different from those before the turn of the century.

In contrast, we are working with Youth to DISCONNECT from technology. Show them what life was like in the analog era, and experience life differently than behind a screen. We seek to empower them with a connection to a pre-digital-era world, and expand the capacity of their minds, creativity, and imagination. Equipping them with the tools to understand that not everything was done using a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Nor does everything have to be.

Stay tuned to learn more about our programs for Youth and Seniors, as well as Indigenous literacy programming, tutoring, English Language Learning, and Adult literacy support.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO FILL THE GAPS WHERE SCHOOLS FALL SHORT! WILL YOU JOIN US AS A VOLUNTEER?

A decline in basic foundational literacy has occurred in Canada - specifically in reading/writing and math - something we should take action on.

The last Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), a global study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, tested the knowledge and skills of 15-year-old students, finding that foundational knowledge has declined over the last few years in Canada.

Public school systems are STRETCHED for resources, but it's causing students to fall behind. Literacy Central Vancouver Island fills in the gaps to get students where they need to be.

Help a Child Discover the Joy of Learning!

Literacy Central Vancouver Island is looking for volunteer tutors to support children, youth, and families in our community.

A few hours of your time can make a lasting difference. Volunteers help learners build reading, writing, language, and literacy skills while developing confidence, independence, and a love of learning.

Experience working with children, youth, education, or literacy is highly valued, but we also welcome caring, patient, and committed individuals who are willing to learn and make a positive impact. All volunteers begin with an onboarding process, and must obtain the appropriate CRC.

As a volunteer, you'll become part of a welcoming community dedicated to helping children and families succeed. The rewards are tremendous—not only for the learners you support, but for the volunteers who build meaningful connections and see firsthand the difference literacy can make.

Literacy is about much more than reading and writing. Today, literacy includes digital skills, numeracy, understanding forms and documents, finding reliable information, and participating fully in work and community life.

Yet many Canadians continue to face literacy challenges that can affect employment, income, health, and access to services. Strong literacy skills help people build confidence, access opportunities, support their families, and engage more fully in their communities.
