Did you know…? The Nanaimo Drowning Prevention Coalition (NDPC) is a network of aquatic professionals, emergency responders and representatives from community agencies who work towards preventing drowning related deaths and injury.

Active since April 2024, and spearheaded by Dr. Steve Beerman, Deputy President of Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS) Commonwealth and lifelong advocate of drowning prevention initiatives worldwide, the NDPC aims to bring together partner agencies to promote the safe enjoyment of our aquatic facilities and environment.

RCMSAR 27 was pleased to host representatives from community agencies as we plan for upcoming summer events and Drowning Prevention initiatives.

Our many partner agencies include the City of Nanaimo and RDN Aquatic Programs, Nanaimo Port Authority, the Nanaimo Canoe and Kayak Club, Island Health, Nanaimo Community Policing, Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society, ICBC, NSAR, RCMP Bike Unit and other community stakeholders.

Help us welcome RCMSAR 27-Nanaimo’s new spring cohort! 🥳

Yesterday, three of our newest crew went on their first check ride with the station. They learned invaluable skills including target spotting, close-quarter maneuvering, line handling and man-overboard drills. Can you see the buoys in our slalom course? 🛟🚩

Thank you to the new crew for joining our station and keeping our community safe! We look forward to training with you! ⚓️

RCMSAR 27’s newest members, Dean, Brian, Aidan, and Marco, spent last weekend working on their rescue skills.

The new crew members practiced techniques for bringing people out of the water and into the boat. Oscar, our rescue mannequin, was successfully rescued many times! Practice makes perfect!

Other new skills that are part of their initial training include self recovery skills (getting back into the boat from in the water), egress from an overturned vessel, throwing a ring buoy, carrying a dewatering pump, and lifting an anchor. Great work and lots of fun!

April 19–25 is National Volunteer Week in Canada, and we want to take this opportunity to recognize and thank the incredible people who keep our station running.

Our crew of 46 dedicated volunteers and support members are the backbone of RCMSAR 27. Quite simply, this station could not function without your commitment, skill, and countless hours of service.

We also want to extend our gratitude to the families who support our members behind the scenes. Late-night callouts, missed dinners, and interrupted plans are all part of what it takes.

We give that time willingly, because keeping our community safe is what matters most.
Thank you to everyone who makes this work possible!

Behind every call-out is preparation.

Did you know RCMSAR Station 27 volunteers with partner agencies like BCEHS to help transport patients from remote areas?

Last night, our crew trained across three nearby islands practicing docking, line handling, and strengthening our local knowledge to be ready when it matters most.

The gorgeous sunset was an added bonus 🌅🚤🛟

Big milestone for our newest crew members at RCMSAR Station 27 👏

This week, they were officially signed off on towing—an essential, real-world skill that plays a critical role in marine search and rescue. From vessel assists to emergency response, towing requires precision, teamwork, and trust. Proud to see the next generation stepping up and ready for the call.

High winds and big waves provided a great opportunity for RCMSAR 27 crews to do some adverse weather training. To wrap up a fun afternoon of training, on our return, we found a couple of surprise first aid practice scenarios right in our boathouse! 👍
