Every year on April 28, workers across the country recognize the National Day of Mourning. Unions like the PPWC Local 8 have long played a central role in advancing health and safety standards across industries. Through decades of advocacy, education, and collective bargaining, unions have helped secure critical protections that many workers now take for granted: safer equipment, stronger regulations, the right to refuse unsafe work, and joint health and safety committees. These gains were not handed down. They were fought for through persistence, solidarity, and, too often, in response to tragedy.

Adrian Soldera, president of PPWC Local 8, spoke to North Cowichan council on Feb. 4, saying everyone already knows why the mills are closing and that a new task force would be a waste of time.

“On the surface it sounds reasonable, but this task force is not just unnecessary. It’s also a dangerous distraction,” Soldera said. “We don’t need more explorers; we need a rescue plan.”

From Confederation of Canadian Unions President Shawn Campbell: "This week, the first round of layoffs officially began at the Crofton pulp mill on Vancouver Island. Families are losing their paychecks, and workers are being forced to empty their lockers. Despite the critical role forestry plays in our economy, our Brothers and Sisters in the Public and Private Workers of Canada - PPWC are being met with federal delays and inadequate support."

Every year on November 11, PPWC Local 8 gathers in silence to honour the lives of those who served and died in times of war. The red poppy remind us of the immense cost of freedom. But Remembrance Day is more than a memorial—it is a moral responsibility. It calls on us to remember not only the soldiers who gave their lives to end tyranny and fascism, but also the democratic values they fought to protect: equality, freedom, and solidarity.
