A good first step for housing. Now let’s build on it.

As of March 12, 2026, legislation (Bill C-4) introducing a 100% GST rebate for first time home buyers on new homes up to $1 Million (with a partial rebate up to $1.5 Million has received Royal Assent.

welcome news and an important step in addressing housing affordability. Reducing costs on new construction helps get homes built and lowers the barrier for people trying to enter the market.

But this policy currently touches only about 5.8% of the new construction housing market.

If we truly want to move the needle on housing supply and affordability, we need to go further.

Applying GST relief to all new construction would have a much greater impact—encouraging more homes to be built, improving project viability, and helping increase the supply our communities urgently need.

Housing starts with homes being built.
