I wanted to reach out with love and support after the devastating news of the school shooting in Tumbler Ridge. Even when something like this happens in another community, it can still feel deeply personal—especially for educators who hold the emotional safety and wellbeing of students so close to their hearts.

Experiences like this can stir fear, grief, anxiety, and exhaustion, and everyone processes that differently. Please know that it’s okay to feel whatever you’re feeling, and to take the space, time, and care you need. Your work is emotionally demanding even in the best of times, and moments like this can add an extra layer of weight that isn’t always visible.

Thank you teachers for the compassion, stability, and care you bring into your classrooms and school spaces every day. The safety and trust you create truly matters more than words can express.

Sending care, compassion, and strength to educators, parents, students and all.

For the 2024/25 school year, private schools in BC will receive $571 million in public funding from the provincial government, an increase of 14.5 percent.
At this rate, public funds going to private schools will almost double every 5 years.
The percentage increases in public funding to private schools over the last 20 years far outstripped the rate of growth in public school funding.
Additional public subsidies to private schools and their patrons include: - property tax exemptions, - tax breaks on donations and tuition, and - a child care tax credit on a portion of tuition attributed to recess and lunch supervision.
While large sums of public dollars are diverted to private schools annually, public schools are struggling with inadequate funding and unmet needs.

As we begin a new school year, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all of you—and especially to the many new teachers who are joining our staff this year. We’re so glad to have you with us. To support new colleagues, we’re excited to continue our joint teacher mentorship program with the school district, creating opportunities for collaboration, guidance, and professional growth.
Looking ahead, there are a number of important events on our calendar:

*Fall Zone Meeting – October 18–19 in Cranbrook
*BCTF Fall Representative Assembly – November 7–8 in Victoria
*Provincial Bargaining – currently underway and an important focus for us all

In addition, our Professional Development planning will begin this month. If you have ideas or suggestions, please share them with your staff rep or our Pro-D chair so we can continue to build meaningful learning opportunities together.

Most importantly, I wish everyone a smooth and restful start to the school year. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly if you have any concerns or questions—your voices matter, and together we make our union strong.

In solidarity,
Keith Greenhalf

The other day, someone said to me, "I don't really know if every school needs a school counsellor."

As a school counsellor myself, I’ve realized that many people don’t fully understand what we do. It’s so much more than just counseling students! This 3-slide list isn’t exhaustive, but it gives a glimpse into the vital role we play in schools.

The campaigned on ensuring every school has a counsellor—let’s make sure they follow through!

We hope your first day back is a great one! Remember we have our next ALTA meeting this Wednesday!
