May 4th to 10th is the Canadian Mental Health Association Mental Health Week. The 2026 theme is "Come Together, Canada," focusing on strengthening social connections to combat loneliness and improve mental health. The campaign urges small, daily actions to build community belonging. Strengthening social connections to combat loneliness and improve mental health is a core value of The Men's Shed movement. Attached is a short video from Men's Shed Canada on the benefits of joining a Shed. If you're interested in joining the Shed, come by and see us Monday's, Wednesday's and Friday's 9:00 - 11:00 in the basement of the Robertson Memorial United Church 117 3rd Ave N.W. Nakusp.

Nakusp & Area Men's Shed would like to highlight and congratulate one of our Shedders, Henry, for starting the Makers club with the support of the high school workshop. The club meets weekly and is focusing on 3D printing currently. The club has 3 students and will resume in the fall and hope to increase student participation. Check out some of the cool projects in their newsletter. One of the projects was made for the Men's Shed to improve the dust collection on our table saw. This is a great space for the students to learn new skills and create useful items locally, reducing the reliance on traditional manufacturing. We are very proud of Henry's initiative!!!

Thank you to Mike Hibberson for the donation of a drill press to our Shed. Our Shed has had a great start with some basic tools from an initial donation by ASLCS. More from our individual Shedders and now a drill press from Mike. If you have shop tools no longer being used, consider giving them renewed life creating community projects at the Nakusp & Area Men's Shed. You can reach us on Facebook messenger or stop by the Shed if you're interested in making a donation.

Along with our community activities, our Shed members have been working on our space. We started some upgrades to make our space more effective and organized, leaving more room for future shop tools and project work and gathering space. This week some of our shedders installed our new sign above the entrance to the shed so we're a little easier to find. There are usually a shedder to two at the shed Mon, Wed & Fri from about 9:00 until noon in the basement of the Robertson Memorial United Church. Stop in and say hello if you're in the area.

The Nakusp & Area Men's Shed recently had our AGM and today we are celebrating our 1 year anniversary. It has been a great first year working on community and individual projects in our shed. It has been wonderful working with NACFOR building picnic tables, ASLCS working on their garden project and supporting the bottle and fabric recycling project transferring bottles from the village recycle centre and the Thrift shop to their sorting and storage areas. The recent ALFA Arts Nakusp birdhouse event was fantastic as well as the individuals in the community that made donations for small service projects. A fantastic carving workshop by Huge Egener in the Shed last year that was well attended.

In 2026 we a planning more picnic tables for NACFOR and continuing to work with ASLCS on bottles and fabric. We hope to build a mini library this year for the Nakusp Library, we have some firewood to split and hope to complete a number of upgrades in the Shed. We also are planning an open house at the shed some time later this year. We are also toying with the idea of a soap box car build, but as our Shed is still small, we're not sure we have enough members to organize a race this year. We'll have to see how that one goes.

We are a non-profit organization and rely on membership, community project support and donations to keep the Shed going. We would like to thanks ASLCS for the generous donation of shop tools that kick started our Shed. Thank you for the support and we look forward to a continued relationship serving our community together.

The Nakusp Men's Shed isn't just projects. We took some time out today for a short road trip down the valley. One of our Shedders son's is dreaming of an Overlander project and we checked out a possible base vehicle for the project. We also stopped in at the Silverton General Store for a coffee and treats. Thanks to Katrina for a tour of the old elevator in the building.
