Annie Whiskeychan's legacy lives on in every Cree youth who speaks their language with pride.

She fought to protect and strengthen Cree language at a time when it was being silenced, and her work helped create a future where Cree children could learn their own language in school, in their communities, and with confidence. She did not just build curriculum; she helped protect identity, culture, and belonging for generations to come.

Today, that impact is still being felt in classrooms across Eeyou Istchee. The books, lessons, and language resources she helped create continue to shape the learning journey of Cree students. Her story is a reminder to Cree youth that their language is powerful, their culture is living, and their voices matter.

We also recognize the Cree School Board for hosting Annie Whiskeychan Day and for continuing to honour her vision. By celebrating her life and contributions, they are helping a new generation understand the strength, beauty, and importance of Cree language and culture.
